Over at ESPN.com, David Amber is developing a reputation for getting folks inside of hockey to open up like never before. The latest subject to give the inside dish to Amber is Willa Ford, actress, model, singer and the soon-to-be Mrs. Mike Modano. That's her showing off her engagement ring last November.Needless to say, Ford's comments were not cleared by the Dallas Stars PR operation. Here's what she had to say about Modano being stripped of his captaincy before the start of the season:
I was completely flabbergasted and pissed off to be quite honest with you. I mean, how rude. He is a franchise player who has given his all to his team. It was like somebody didn't want to lose their job -- nobody wants to lose their job. "Let's just blame it on this and maybe this will fix it." Clearly, that didn't fix it.I can only imagine. As it turns out, Willa was also unhappy about how the Nashville Predators ignored the new scoring record Modano set for American-born players this season.
[...]
I think the staff and the GM [Doug Armstrong] have a different idea of what a captain should be. They think a captain should be yelling at their team. They think a captain should be absolutely as verbal as possible. I know from running a household with Mike how he can be quiet; but when he says something, it can be very powerful.
Later on during the interview, it becomes quite apparent that Modano is hanging around in the background listening in on the phone call with Amber. That led me to wonder, what the heck was Modano thinking as the call progressed?
I know I'd be thinking I was a very lucky guy.

good for her, MIke should still be the captain. He is a lucky guy to have a girl who stands up for her husband and thinks that much of him.

As the wife of an ex-player, I have to disagree with Mike's girlfriend making the comments she did. Naturally you should stand by your man and I am sure Mike knows she supports him, but commenting to such an extent was uncalled for. She could have said how disappointed she was and left it at that.

Well, considering that you're clearly an idiot on multiple levels I really don't think it freakin' matters what you would have been thinking in that situation. Willa Ford is certainly entited to her opinion, but she should have kept it to herself as it's simply not her place to be whining and running her mouth in that instance, regardless of whether or not Amber goaded her into it. I'm sure Mike has any number of "duties" for her to perform in order to stay around (she's had a bit of fame, but he could have 100 of her, obviously), but publicly analyzing his role with the Stars should never be on the list.

Any particular reason for that? Or should women simply be seen and not heard? (Judging from the friendly tone of the rest of your post, that wouldn't surprise me.) Woman's entitled to her opinions, and as with anyone with even a modicum of fame, her opinions are sought for public consumption. Not seeing where the problem comes in here, especially since the NHL itself was seeking her opinion earlier in the playoffs as the Stars playoff celebrity blogger.

Werd, Doogie2K. I'd rather hear Willa Ford break down the Stanley Cup Playoffs than Darren Pang.

she has no business commenting on anything related to his job. When you are running low on cash and you dont tip the pizza delivery guys does his wife come knock on your door and yell at you? If you get passed over for a promotion at your job do you have your girlfriend go in and tell them what she thinks of it? Rule #1...Millionaires who play a game for a living should never complain about anything. And the woman they bring along for the ride should shut up, make him a sandwich, and then go spend his money.

It's a woman commenting on sports! Who really gives a damn what she has to say anyhow?

In response to comment number 8, thats a bad analogy. She didnt go complain to the Dallas Stars GM, she complained in a scheduled interview to the press. I'm not going to comment on your degrading comment about women making sandwiches and spending money... She stuck up for her husband like she should. If media covered my job and I got screwed over, my girlfriend sure as hell would go complain. Thats because she loves me. In short, change your views on women and you might just get a girlfriend who cares about you.

Hmmm, let me guess, she'd like Mike to be traded to the LA Kings?
Cynical I know, but my first thought was that she was doing this so he'd get traded to LA (assuming that's where she wants to be).

If she has any clout, Modano ends up traded to LA or New York, just like Pronger's wife's ultimatum. Modano rules in Dallas and she needs to butt out.

OK....Willa needs to stay out of this, yes i know thats her soon-to-be husband... but taking him of captain has nothing to do with her.. and mike modano better not move to the LA kings... he rules in dallas and everyone lives him here

Willa’s desperation to get Modano locked into a wedding date is showing. She’s having parties in tents and inviting (she thinks) the “right people.” She’s giving “defend your man against the meanies” interviews attacking the Dallas Stars management, coaching staff & players.
I can’t wait to see what she does next. This gets better all the time..............

Maybe Willa needs to lace up and protect her man on the ice, too. How pathetic he is to use her to fight his battles. He's an aging superstar who thinks about himself and not his team. He should grow up or retire. She should comment on something she knows about like taking her clothes off or trying to dance.

Maybe if Modano were man enough not to have to let his chick "clean up" for him and he handled things himself (like a man...and in the NHL it IS a man's game), then maybe he'd still be the captain...
