With all the talk about the NHL adding a second team in Toronto lately casting a spotlight on teams in potential trouble, there have been the usual teams that pundits have pointed towards possible relocation, such as the Predators, Thrashers and perhaps even the Coyotes.
However, one team that is potentially facing a real dilemma is the New York Islanders.
The Isles have been trying to move out of or upgrade aging Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum for years. Now, the latest project to modernize the venue for the team to compete with the rest of the NHL with all the bells and whistles of today's luxury boxes and revenue-generating aspects is called the Lighthouse Project.
The Lighthouse Project calls for renovating the current Coliseum with a reconstruction of the interior and adding those items, adding a Town Center-type of development around it, modernizing what is now the parking lots for the arena with development.
But the Islanders have had trouble getting the local authorities to approve the project, and now the team is a bit of limbo on how the team's future will look.
To his credit, Islanders owner Charles Wang has refused to play the usual hostage-taking game, trying to stay positive in working to get the project passed with Nassau County and the Town of Hempstead. He even brought Gary Bettman out to the Island this week, where the commish refused to address speculation what might happen if the Lighthouse isn't approved instead of throwing down the gauntlet to get the project passed - or else.
But clearly, this project could be the last hope the team has of remaining on Long Island.
In the latest Forbes franchise evaluations, the Islanders were ranked 29th of 30 teams, with the arena blamed for the bleak financial picture.
Factor in an onerous lease and the Islanders generate less money from their arena than any other team in the NHL. The Isles would seem to be a prime candidate for the NHL's revenue sharing system. No such luck. Teams in markets with 2.5 million TV households are ineligible to collect from the league's welfare system. The only thing keeping the Islanders out of bankruptcy is a lucrative cable deal whereby Cablevision pays the Islanders over $15 million per season and increases the value of the deal through 2030.
While the Islanders themselves claim to lose between $14 million and $20 million per season, Forbes estimates roughly the team does lose roughly $9 million per year. Either way, it isn't a pretty financial picture for the long-term success without the renovation and the money it would infuse in the franchise.
The other problem is the vicious cycle that surrounds teams that aren't making a profit, as ownership is reluctant to spend money on the product with the long-term future finances unclear, leading to a lesser product and less attendance.
The Islanders finished last overall in attendance in 2007-08 and currently are dead last in the league in attendance this year with 13,233 per game, a result of a team that most view to be a non-playoff squad playing in a dark and dreary arena in Uniondale. And, with no guarantee of escaping from the financial losses, there's no incentive to improve the product to boost the attendance.
And, with the economy struggling, it hurts the team both ways as people are less likely to spend cash on an inferior product, while more damaging long-term, it's much harder to get a project like this passed with the expectation that public money will be spent to get the project done. And, with the uproar over spending on sports facilities thanks to the Yankees' new playpen in the Bronx, the mood right now among politicians isn't exactly to be hospitable to sports' teams requests.
So, while Wang has refused to address the possibility he might sell the Islanders, if the Lighthouse fails to get off the ground, without a new arena in the works and little hope of turning a project, it's hard to see the Islanders staying put.

Nice language, Frankie-boy. Do you kiss your mommy with that filthy mouth of yours?? You know, I try to tell my friends that Islander fans aren't all classless low-life scum with poor language skills...but then here you go proving me wrong. You know, if all of you were so loyal to your team as to call perfect strangers filthy names in their defense, perhaps you should actually go to the games and support them. Then maybe they wouldn't have to move to Canada. And to you, Frankie-BOY, I say (waving enthusiastically) buh-bye!!!

I've been an Islander's fan since day one. The way that this franchise has been allowed to operate over the past 12 years or so is an embarrassment to the NHL. Is this league for real? They peddle garbage like this and wonder why the sport is struggling for an identity in america. There was a time when I would watch any hockey that was televised because I loved the sport but now my disgust has grown to the point that if the NHL shut down I wouldn't miss it. Year after year hockey fans on Long Island have had to endure one poor season after another operated by general managers and owners who took no pride in their organization. Where's the accountability? It's time for a NEW hockey league with players that compete ALL the time and whose franchises are required to at least make an effort at putting a quality product on the ice......not like the N.Y. Islanders.

Well you can't blame the islander organization entirely.. its not if they haven't been trying... The original owners were responsible for signing one of the dumbest concession deals with the company that does the Nassau Mosileum so that the Islanders get almost none of the money from concessions. Then there is the Mosileum itself.. they been trying for years to get a new or to upgrade the building and the city where they play won't help with the cost.. They even tried going after big name free agents a couple of years ago hoping to increase attendance( Michael Pecca & Satan)but couldn't resign that Ryan Smith cause he didn't want to play in a empty aging and decrepit Moliseum even though the Islanders offered him more money than Colrado did. So now they can't even get top line free agents to sign here. So with out fan support and a better arena would u keep spending money on lazy fat cat superstars.. and losing 9 million ( thats the forbes figure..the islanders claim they lose over 20 million a year) Or do what the Islanders are trying to do now and go with young in grown talent( thats how they eventually built up and go on to win 4 stanley cups in a row) The problem is the fans are spoiled and want their teams to have the high paid superstars or they don't go and support the teams.. I say the fans should go and watch the young hungry kids play.. and finally give the okay on the light house project.. besides helping the islanders immensely attract free agents and increase attendance.. it will also help the area of Long Island financially with the stores that are planned in the project.. so its a win, win situation. Yes it will cost the people now but in the end it will make the area nicer and help the town finacially.. and think about it.. Other than the ducks.. the Islanders are the only sport organization to call Long island their home.. something Long Islanders should have some pride in.. when you consider their yes old but very proud history of winning 4 stanley cups in a row.. No one has done anything like it since then and I'm betting no one will ever again. They won 19 series to get those 4 cups and were one series away from a 5th. The great Canadien teams who won all those cups only had to win 2 series. each year.. If the islanders had it that way when they were on their run they would have won a amazing 9 cups in a row!! So Support the team even though they aren't great now and if they have a chance.. they may be great again...

This is a travesty. If they take our team the only one to blame is nassau county and the town of hempstead.
People can say whatever they want about charles wang. But he is the ONLY reason the islanders are still here. He has stuck with us all the way. He and garth are trying to clean up the mess made by Milbury and the previous 3 owners.
I hope they get this project approved asap. I have been an isles fan for 16 years, i dont want to lose my team. Especially now when they are finally heading in right direction.
