Report: Roberto Luongo Out 4 to 5 Weeks

Mathias Brunet at cyberpresse.ca is reporting that Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo will be out of the lineup for four to five weeks after suffering a groin injury this weekend during a game with the Pittsburgh Penguins (via Alanah McGinley at Canucks and Beyond). For the English translation, click here.

As I mentioned over the weekend, the loss of Luongo is roughly akin to the loss of Martin Brodeur in New Jersey, although it appears that Canucks fans ought to be breathing a bit easier with reports that the Montreal native is set to miss just a bit more than a month of action.

As a matter of fact, McGinley has already posted her top five reasons why the team will be able to survive Luongo's absence, most helpfully pointing out the fact that despite their offensively-challenged reputation, the Canucks are still No. 5 overall in the NHL in scoring. McGinley also claims that backup goalie Curtis Sanford is, "on a roll," thanks to some recent excellent performances.

All I can say right now is that he better be, what with the Detroit Red Wings coming to town tonight.

UPDATE: Via email, McGinley has informed me that Gilles Lupien is denying on Team 1040 in Vancouver that he provided the 4-5 weeks estimation
