On Wednesday night in Chicago, San Jose Sharks forward Mike Grier drilled Blackhawks defenseman Aaron Johnson from behind and into the boards. Johnson spent a couple of minutes on the ice writhing in pain before finally skating off the ice and onto the team's injured list. Grier got a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct, and is certain to be waiting by the phone for a call from NHL disciplinary czar Colin Campbell to hear if any supplementary discipline is in store.
So what say you, dear readers? Is a suspension in order, or should Grier -- who first caught my eye with a devastating open ice hit while at Boston University -- skate away without any additional punishment?
Was it boarding? Yes. Was it Mike Grier finishing a check on the fore-check? Yes.
Is Mike Grier a dirty hockey player? No.
I think it was a case of Grier finishing his check, not anything of malicious intent. if he does sit any games, it should definitely only be a small handful.
Nah, Scott also has an obligation to protect himself. He watched his pass way too long (ooh look at the pretty pass) before Grier nailed him. This hit happens all the time in the NHL. Scott just didn't protect himself. Grier got a 5 minute major...and was not suspended.
It's a cheap shot no matter how you look at it. I'm a fan of old time hockey and the hits and fights that came with it but there's no place in hockey for potentially season/career ending hits. That was not just a guy finishing a check.
I never thought Grier was a dirty player, but if you watch the replay...he clearly knew what he was doing. Johnson had passed the pass about 5 seconds before and turned away. I played for years and you are taught at junior level to go to the players side. Never hit him when you can see the numbers looking at you. What this turd was thinking of Ill never know. Maybe the sharks were mad that the lowly hawks were giving them a good game in their own building??!! No call for this crap. I would heavily suspend him!
Johnson got away with an elbow on Grier earlier in the game. Grier obviously took his number and thought this was his chance to get even. So it was retribution. Suspension is in order.
doubleT.... your an idiot. It wasnt even 5 sec long in super slow mo. It was a hit from the shoulder to the 2 on his back, not a square hit. Also jonson knew grier was coming and didnt protect himself. this is a boarding penalty at most. 5 min was not called for, and nhl fined him 1,000 because they couldnt just drop the case it would look bad. Theres a reason he wasnt fined more, or suspended.

I may be wearing a Bergeron shirt while typing this, but very simply, [familyfriendlysite] mike grier. Make him lose 20 games for that kind of play.
But considering how it's worked out in the past, we're looking at Grier playing 10 games before Johnson knows where he is.

Players drop thier guard once the puck is gone, in this case the puck was long gone and so is Grier for two.
