Hold your breath, it's time for another one of those moments when the NHL turns into a small suburban high school.Sean Avery, in Calgary with the Dallas Stars to play the Flames and never one to shun the spotlight, actually summoned a camera crew from Canada's TSN to deliver the following statement as reported by the Calgary Herald:
You'll recall that earlier this season that Stars center Mike Modano expressed his displeasure with Avery and partner-in-crime Steve Ott. Today it was Stars goalie Marty Turco's turn to play the role of savvy and sage veteran: "Well, hopefully, he doesn't back down . . . and he shows up like a man ... But we expect that out of him, like we have all year. The show continues.""Uh, I'm really happy to be back in Calgary. I love Canada.
"And I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about.
"Enjoy the game tonight."
The jab, of course, is directed at Calgary Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf, who is dating Avery's ex-girlfriend, Elisha Cuthbert. The actress, reportedly, also dated Mike Komisarek of the Montreal Canadiens.
The 25-second clip - in its entirety; he refused to answer answer questions - got a rise out of some of his younger teammates. "He said what?" shrieked one. Many of them cackled, in fact.
Indeed it does. Tonight in the U.S., Versus elected to air Philadelphia vs. Tampa Bay. I bet they're regretting that decision about now.

Wait, which show, the Avery show, or the Marty Turco Lets in a Ton of Goals show? Both have been wildly entertaining.

Just shows you what a low life he really is! For a guy who makes a living running his mouth, this is par for the course.
Life has a way of coming around too bite you when you let your mouth write a check your A** can't cash!
Sooner or later someone will dish out some pain, maybe even one of his teammates? I hope the refs don't break it up too soon, not until Mr. PrettyBoy gets made too ugly for modeling!

SUSPENDED for what??? Come on, this is about politics! Sean Avery has the right to voice his opinion about anything he chooses.
1. he did not even use a cuss word
2. publicity stunt
3. rattle up the other team, would it have been acceptable for him to comment on Dion's mother???
These guys (NHL) need to let be concerned with bigger issues. Word slinging is just part of the game.

What Sean Avery said about Elisha Cuthbert was vile and disgusting. It doesn't matter if he said a cuss word or not. This just goes to show you the coarsening of society and how the younger people of today don't have any class or respect for themselves, let alone anyone else. As far as I know, Ms. Cuthbert hasn't been arrested for any serious crime. She's just a beautiful young woman who is trying to find herself, in a world where jocks think they have some kind of right to use women,
and then disrespect them. Isn't that what we hate what those misogynists in the Middle East are all about?
If I were Ms. Cuthbert's father or her brother, I'd find this punk and have a conversation with him that wouldn't be at all friendly. Avery may play hockey in the NHL, but he is something less than a man. Ms. Cuthbert is way better off without this loser in her life.

I totally agree !!! This man is a complete humiliation to the game of hockey. If he could keep his mouth shut and quit with his embarrassing little stunts. I hope that he does not get to play again.

WOW!! When I first heard this story I wondered what his exact comments were. Now that I have read this I can't believe this has gotten him suspended or that people are making a big deal about this. To say that his comments are detrimental to the league.... A league where a player (Bertuzzi) can cheap shot another player, ruining a mans career, and still be playing today. A game that includes fighting as part of the normal play, but a little trash talking is DETRIMENTAL to the league? A game where someone has used there sticks as weapons to purposely injure another player and they are still playing the game today. I believe in normal society this is called assault with a deadly weapon and you go to jail for such a crime. I finish with this.. yes his comments might be hurtful to others but I believe in this country we have the right to free speech. You might not like him but he has every right to say what he wants to say!!

honestly, im a female and i completely agree with you. yea he may be a big douce bag...and yea the comments were rude as hell. but detrimental to the league? i dont see how. he made a dumb rude comment but i dont see how that has anything to do with him playing hockey. theyre worrying too much about public image instead of fair rules in the game. doesnt make any sense.
let him make a fool out of himself if he wants..but that doesnt deserve a suspension in my opinion..
i was expecting something muchhh worse than that for a suspension. no one ever said you had to be a nice guy to play hockey....so whats the big deal?

The real problem here and it is a serious one is an idividuals, Avery's, lack of respect for people. I shows I believe a lack of respect for himself also. It is a sad situation where someone feels the need to treat others like this. It is time in my opinion when Avery should do something somewhere other than the NHL.

Yeah "H@wksF@n" freedom of speech excuses any kind of ignorant behavior. What if it was your sister or your daughter he said that kind of junk about? So what he plays in the NHL?
Is that an excuse for being a moron? I don't pay good money
to buy tickets to support these kind of jokers. Anyway, In my neighborhood a man who publicly disses a woman in the manner that he did Ms. Cuthbert is a punk. Pure and simple. Btw, how do you think she feels hearing herself referenced in such a vulgar and disgusting manner? The NHL was right to suspend this guy. It's bad for the bottom line.
Nobody should respect this guy until he grows up and starts acting like a real man. Right now he's nothing but a a piece of ----. No different than those ignorant fools who are destroying the reputations of the NFL and the NBA.
No difference whatsoever.

Suspended for that? Really?? First of all, everybody has talked trash about at least one of their ex's. Quit pretending to be offended by it. Are people so thin skinned that they let some words offend them so badly? So he's rude, so what? Ignore him and move on.
And second of all, IT'S HOCKEY! This is a sport where fighting is commonplace and only gets you a 5 minute timeout, and you're worried about the athletes having CLASS? Are you insane? Have you ever been in a hockey locker room? We're a crass bunch... get over it. People that are offended by this kind of thing have A.) obviously never played hockey/been around hockey players and B.) need to grow up.
I for one think it's hilarious when somebody like Avery can get under so many people's skin. He's getting what he wants, and the people that are offended are the losers here.

And the people who aren't offended are afraid to take a stand for anything, either that or they don't have any morals. A very serious line was crossed this time. The losers are the ones who support these man children who think they can get away with anything, and like the fools we are, we will keep buying tickets to support this kind of crap.
It is not wrong for people in a society to take stand. Yes, he has freedom of speech, and we have the freedom of speech to call him out as the punk that he is.
What he said about a beautiful woman in public is over the line and the NHL acted responsibly by suspending his ignorant ass.

No, Mikhail, YOU don't get it. Avery should have been allowed to play last night so that Phaneuf could have fought him like a man and blasted him into little ugly pieces. Unfortunately, the little sh*t lucked out by being suspended. When your own team dislikes you, YOU are the the problem. I guess you must be a first-class d*ck head like Avery. Do your teammates think that you're a d*ck head, too? His time in L.A & N.Y. have given him way too big a head. Next time, I hope that Phaneuf gives him a big head with his fists. He's a little punk who'll get his and I'll be one of the millions who'll be cheering. He's NOT a tough hockey player, he's a little, arrogant sh*t who has no respect for the game that you say that you love so much. Wake up. I await your response.

I thought this was America(even if it was in Canada) where you can say anything you want its protected by the First Amendment. This is why hockey will never get a following in Amercia like the other sports. I can see why other sports stars get suspended for carrying guns and stuff like that but for saying something about an ex girlfriend the NHL needs to grow up its not a middle school. Sean Avery just became my favorite player of ALL TIME

Hey Mikhail!
You don't sound like a hockey player or a fan of the NHL at all!
If you were, you'd know what an idiot Sean Avery has ALWAYS been. He's getting suspended partly because the league is sick of dealing with his attitude. Even his own teammates can't stand his mouth. It's not just this incident. He's a repeat offender. Check it out.
I've played hockey all my life. I would never call a bunch of writers + reporters together so that I could make punk ass comments about an ex girlfriend. Sean Avery is not a man. He's a misogynist immature little wimp in need of a serious "attitude adjustment" on the ice, and some psychological help off of it. If you think trash talk is appropriate, and a big part of the game, it suggests you don't have any game! Professional athletes need to have more class.
Don't defend Sean Avery. Instead, LEARN from his very poor example; and watch him eventually lose his NHL career if he just can't keep his psychotic mouth shut! The NHL did the right thing.
No team wants to have this guy around. L.A., N.Y.R. Dallas. Ask yourself why this guy keeps getting traded away? He's a jackass.

You people who can't see what's wrong with what Sean Avery said are completely missing the point. It's not about freedom of speech.
Sean Avery is a repeat offending idiot to the NHL for a variety of offenses. The league and his teammates are sick of dealing with his psychotic mouth! I've played hockey all my life. Players like Avery need a serious "Attitude Adjustment" on the ice, and some professional psychiatric help off of it. Check out his history. L>A>
New York, Dallas, etc. There's a reason no teammates like this guy.
