When the Dallas Stars host Phoenix on Tuesday night, forward Sean Avery will be eligible to return from his six-game suspension for making some off-color comments about former girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert, and her current squeeze, Dion Phaneuf of the Calgary Flames. It was quite the story for a while, and the Stars have decided they no longer want anything to do with it, or their big offseason acquisition, as they announced today that Avery will not be returning to the team. TSN has the story, including comments from Stars co-general manager, Brett Hull:
"Sean needs to focus on his own well-being while the Stars hockey team must focus on playing hockey and competing for a playoff spot," said Stars Co-General Manager Brett Hull. "Everyone understands that Sean will not return to the Dallas Stars. We all need to move forward."So this was the straw that finally broke the camel's back for Avery -- a sex joke. A stupid one, of course. And one that you might be more likely to hear in a high school cafeteria, but a sex joke nonetheless.
According to the TSN report, the Stars will continue to honor Avery's contract, which was a four-year, $15.5 million deal signed on July 2, 2008.
I thought the NHL was a bit over the top in its suspension of Avery. You don't get that much of a punishment for potentially ending a career with a vicious hit from behind into the boards.
Still, I have no problem with the Stars as an organization stepping in and not welcoming Avery back, or, attempting to cut ties with him all together. They signed him, they can deal with him as they see fit. Though, they should have known what they were getting when they signed him for four years.
Avery's on-ice and off-ice exploits are well documented, and he's no stranger to controversy. I'm just a little surprised that this is what, ultimately, was his downfall in the NHL. Then again, maybe I shouldn't be.
The 28-year-old Avery registered three goals and seven assists in 23 games for the Stars this season.

This isn't going to help anyone with anger management issues. I would be steaming mad if I was Avery. The stars used him for PR and even did a story in their program about his antics...but the second he is typical Sean Avery they turn their backs on him. I wouldn't want to be part of the team who says he isn't a team player, but doesn't show him the same respect of being a team player. Avery is a team player ON the ice...off the ice he's a bit schizophrenic...but they knew that when they sign him.
Because of this (blowing this all way way out of proportion) I may not buy my seats for next season.

Let me just comment on your reference to him being a bit schizophrenic, that is about the stupidest thing you could of said do you even know what schizophrenia is, I might not know enough about this situation to make a comment on the actual issue but I can assume you are wrong by your use of words and the lack of intelligence you show about your comparisons.

This is ridiculous. What he said are the type of things being said in every locker room. And for the Stars to not stand behind a teammate show the character of the whole organization. Brett Hull is a hypocrit him and his old man (Bobby) are both drunken ass chasers and they know it.
I would welcome Sean to any team as a GM and would like to see him become a Bruin and help bring a cup back to Boston. So Dallas stay on you path of nothingness and remember karma.
And no one has said his comments were innaccurate! So what if she's sloppy seconds... good job by the league to put this in the national spotlight. No wonder the great sport of hockey strugggles so much, the leaders at the NHL are morons!
Good Luck Sean!
And keep up the great interviews!

The Corporate Money first took the pleasure of what use to be an entertaining sport away from the blue collar fan with their luxury suites and then persuaded the NHL to amend rules so the weak of heart money thieves could conduct business without a gunfight breaking out by means of policeing an on ice situation and now they have released a player because of an infantile comment, a comment I suppose is used in the same way when a client of theirs decides to look elsewhere. I don't condone Sean Avery, I just question the logic behind the Dallas Stars decision???

on the grand scale of things, what he said wasnt even that offensive. McSorely almost hacked a guys head off, Crosby dives more then greg lougaines, and them and all th oer bullshit ar still allowed, but saying sloppy seconds gets u baned from the ice? the kindler gentler NHL is starting to suck. and "William" relax, schizophrenic is a great way to describe how he goes from polite, to jackass, to polite to over the top again.
FREE SEAN AVERY!! BRING HIM BACK TO NY!!!

Are you serious, the fired him over this. A bit extreme wouldn't you say? Wow, there has got to be more to this than those silly little words. The punishment far exceeds the infraction. Wow!

So now that Avery is gone, who is Turco going to blame for his abysmal numbers in net this year. Now what Dallas????
Anger management????
Pronger has made a career out of hurting people. He's been suspended 8 times for 20 games. No anger mangement
Bertuzzi almost killed Moore but didn't need anger management.
But Sean Avery needs anger management counseling? It should be noted, of course, that Avery has never committed a single act on the ice that has warranted a suspension, but apparently needs anger management to control his potty mouth.
The NHL is a bunch of hypocrites.
Dion will not be able to play in any arena without the chant of "sloppy seconds" by the home crowd.
Avery did get the last laugh.

Kudos to Dallas management. Instead of bending over and taking it with a smile, they made the right choice in giving Avery the boot. Professional players are looked up to and emulated by children. And no matter what Charles Barkley says, they are role models. They should be held accountable for their actions on and off the "field of play".
It seems, lately, that there are too many players who are putting up "negative numbers" when it comes to their behavior. And, as in the cases like Paxico Burress and Marion Barber, the team just "folds" because "winning is the only thing". Professional sports are no longer games. They are strictly business and should be run as such. Avery is a detriment to his employer so he has been "fired". That he will "go to work" for someone else is not Dallas' concern. They will replace him and be a better "company" for it.
The continued reluctance of teams to discipline players will ony serve to further alienate fans. Particularly those who don`t want to see their children staging dogfights, beating up spectators, abusing spouses, or blaming others for their own shortcomings.
Now, if only the NFL franchise in Dallas would do likewise with their T.O. problem.

its the NHL that should have been penalized. 6 game suspension for trash talk. amazing, and dallas does not want him, even more amazing. at this point dallas is one of the worst teams in the NHL. they need all the help they can get.
it was bad enough that the NHL is playing european hockey.
but to make a big deal out of trash talk, what a disgrace.

Lets see if the NHL has become cowards. if they have they will blackball him. if not watch one of the good teams in the NHL pick him up. brett was right in getting avery, but screwed up by not wringing his neck, then supporting him.

While some of these punishments might seem too much, too quick ... I agree with all the sports who are finally getting serious about some character issues and how they make their team, league look to the rest of us, especially kids...Too long the message has been, 'if you can score that big touchdown, goal, basket, whatever... grades, sportmanship, being a good balanced person, is secondary.' ' Someone else will take that test for you, here's a little cash under the table, we'll quiet that girl', etc. Well done Dallas. Also, the Giants too. Now, if only the Cowboys would learn too.

First of all, people need to understand that this wasn't about one issue. It's about one player dividing a team and undermining the coach with his attitude and antics. It has been going on since he joined the team and was finally pushed over the edge by this. This wasn't something said amongst guys in the locker room. It was Avery taking something to the media to intentionally get a rise out of the media. That kind of crap doesn't have a place in the game. Avery puts himself above every one else on the team. Guys like Modano and Morrow, who I haven't heard speak out against a player in there entire careers, were at the breaking point well before this. This isn't about making Avery a scapegoat. If you actually look at the way the team handled it and what the players are saying, nobody is placing blame for their record on anybody but themselves. Turco takes full responsibility for his play and isn't blaming it on one player. I'm not sure why people need to jump to the conclusion that this is why they made the move.
Second, how does this show bad character on the Dallas organization's point? For once an organization holds its players to an ethical code and it gets ridiculed? The organization gave Avery multiple chances and finally stood up for what it thought was acceptable behavior. It seems kind of backwards that the team gets the blame. They made a choice that very few teams would and put conduct above play. That should be respected not looked down upon. Have we really gotten to the point where its about making a player a scapegoat rather than just not accepting his conduct. And once again, this wasn't a one time thing. It is stuff that the team thought was unacceptable that happened on a daily basis. The media just didn't know about it.
