Thanks to my buddy Greg Wyshynski for pointing to this video of Sidney Crosby getting involved in a scrum on Thursday night against Atlanta. Be sure to watch the whole thing, which includes a number of low blows as Crosby strikes Boris Valabik from behind while his teammate Kris Letang holds Valabik down.
The last time I looked, anybody in the NHL who wants to fight needs to stand toe to toe with their opponent and drop the gloves. I guess Sid didn't get the memo.
As a fan, I understand that with any agressive sport, that agressive behavior will follow such as fighting. But as I was watching this game last night - The Penguins really sank to a low. You never hit a man that is down.. let alone jump in as the 'third man in' while he is down.. and coming from a captian is (just my opinion only) in poor taste as well as bad sportsmanship.
I was hoping that Sidney Crosby would be suspended for his actions, but I doubt he will issue a statement on his bad decision or anything else will come of it.
I am willing to bet that if any of the so called "goons" of hockey were to pull that stunt on Valabik - they would be fined, suspended or tossed from the game.
Sorry if I am offending anyone, but that really bothered me.. and coming from such a great player and role model.
ur an idiot, if u watched the game then you would have seen the other angle, where when crosby was just getting into the scuffle, Valibek number 48, tackles him from behind and slams him to the ground. That would be no big deal, but after he has him down he keeps his whole weight on top of him pressing his face into the ice. Crosby got up and was with good reason pissed off so theres no wonder he did what he did. The thrashers are a joke anyway.
Ok Brad, so what your saying is that because Sidney Crosby, the most unbelievably overrated player in the NHL, has the right to beat the hell out of another player who is down on the ice struggling to get up because his team isn't winning games? Are you serious? Sidney Crosby is a little punk and should go back to playing street hockey with the kids, not in the National Hockey League.
If any player hit Crosby like that under the same circumstances that player would have been suspended. The league goes out of it's way to protect the stars. Crosby should be suspended, period. That was no different than the Bertuzzi hit on Moore. They were both sucker punches to the head. What makes it worse is that Crosby is a dive taking cry-baby when a player gets physical with him.
First of all Bertuzzi's hit was big time chicken s--- coming from a guy who is known to be cheap and this is no comparison. However, The NHL comparing Crosby to Greztky all the time is a joke. The Great One would never take a shot at a guys lower unit from behind. If you watch the last punch Crosby threw was the worst thing I have seen in my 55 years of watching hockey and playing the game. Good thing Crosby is not strong enough or tough enough to hurt anyone. Just stop the comparing. Find something new to promote the game. There will and always have fighting in the game. It is called for in some circumstances but hitting from behind is a sign of a real coward.
Kyle & Chris If Crosby played in your city, you'd love him---also you are not taking into consideration Crosby's face getting slammed into the boards, with nothing called--players constantly take their shots at him, I see it night after night !!
Nobody in the NHL is a saint, even those who win the Lady Byng.
Bottom line is that Crosby is a fantastic player and a great ambassador for the game. But he's not perfect and will never be.
It's also not his fault that people treat him as if he is perfect. Like many overhyped athletes before him, Crosby has no control over how people talk about him.
(This comes from a bit of experience. I am a Packer fan and had to listen to people annoying hype Brett Favre all these years. We loved Favre when he was in Green Bay, but we also recognized Favre wasn't anywhere near perfect, no matter what media types said.)
If you play hockey, you get shots taken at you. Its part of the game. What is not part of the game is the total b-move Crosby pulled by punching a guy from behind who was down and tangled up with another guy already. That should have been straight up dealt with by someone- on the Thrashers or in the stripes. Doing a little research yielded the fact that the player Crosby took those cheap shots on was on Boris Valabik, a 6'7" defenseman who enjoys dropping the gloves. Search him on youtube. Cindy should keep her head up the next time they play the Thrashers. I have a feeling that 6'7" Eastern Europeans dont enjoy being the subject of this sort of coverage.
wow...i think we're reaching with those punches being dirty. looked like there was a whole lot more going on then 2 guys going at it and then crosby jumping in. i think cros is a great player..but come on..my wife swings a harder purse then those punches
Your right Bruce he has no control over what people say about him, though he definately tries to promote it. For example that one "AMAING GOAL" here he slid on the ice and shot it in. Come on. There was NO need to dive the way he did; hes just a highlight reel seeker, and its sad because he could of been a role model that we could actually use as one of the big faces of hockey. Not one who tunes in to ESPN every night to see if he made the top 10 plays, taking shots at a guys balls from behind.
And Dave hell no I wouldn't. If Crosby gets hit in a game and the fans want a call, the refs do everything they can to protect their "superstars." Im a Lightning fan, and have been all my life. I dont care if they've only won 7 games, I still atch every game. You try being a Lightning fan and see how many times your team get screwed out of calls.
Most of you complaining about Crosby are just jealous because one of the leagues best players doesn't play on your team. Crosby's punches are are nothing but powder puff punches anyway. To compare him with anything Todd Bertuzzi has done is laughable.
Ya know, Crosby tries to hit the Thrashers player in the face with the butt end of his stick, then hits a man who is already down twice in the back of the head, once in the kidney, and once in the groin.
Lets face facts, if he gets run by a Kaleta, or Downie he deserves it. Maybe Lucic can crush him in the back of the head a few times. Crosby is a joke. Tons of talent, but his attitude prevents him from being anything more than just a very good player. He wont ever be a great player in this league.
Let's face it, if Crosby went toe to toe (like real men should) he couldn't fight his way out of a wet paperbag. This boy is a joke and and they need to quit babying him. As for the comment, that people would think different if he was on our favorite team, I will take Datsyuk any day of the week over this overrated, cry baby.
You poor saps. Envy screams very loudly from within the majority of these posts. If the kid was playing for your favorite team, you would be singing his praises and glorifying his stats. And please, keep your uninformed comments to yourself unless you actually watch the games (and the resultant scrums) consistently. THANKS.

Love 'em or Hate 'em - doesn't matter. Best player or worst player in the league..........The last puch he threw deserves a suspension period!
You simply don't hit a guy in the junk from behind without earning some sort of suspension
