Hopefully by now you've seen the video of Sidney Crosby and his attempt to light a fire under his teammates by mugging Brett McLean during Saturday's game in Pittsburgh. Actually, it looked like he may have been trying to steal McLean's lunch money. Following the game, both sides had an opportunity to sound off on the showing, and the word "embarrassing" was thrown around the Florida locker room.
First, let's start with Crosby and the Penguins. In his locker room interview with the Pittsburgh media, Crosby acknowledged that he asked McLean if he wanted to go -- as was initially pointed out in the comments section of our earlier post -- and Crosby, naturally, claims that he accepted the challenge.
When a reporter pushed for further confirmation that McLean agreed to dance, Crosby repeated his "yes" and offered up the possibility that the Panthers forward didn't take his offer seriously. He also made some reference to "wasting 20 minutes in the box," while also suggesting his efforts weren't worthy of 19 minutes in penalty time. I'm guessing those statements will fly like a led balloon with hockey fans outside of the 412 area code.
Anyway, if Crosby really did challenge McLean, why did it appear that McLean was ambushed right off the draw? Here's what he told George Richards of the Miami-Herald.
''He said something before the drop but I really didn't pick up on it. So, I kind of wish I had now. Like I said, everyone can understand what he was trying to do for his team. He's their leader, their captain.''Interesting. None of this, of course, changes the fact that Crosby jumped McLean right off the draw -- as McLean was attempting to play the puck -- while he insisted on fighting with his visor on, and essentially tried to mug him while he was down on the ice.
Richards also asked defenseman Nick Boynton his opinion on what transpired. First, Boynton was asked if he would have liked to have seen Crosby back on the ice at some point in the third period -- he was let out of the penalty box with three minutes to play -- to which Boynton replied, "Oh yeah."
He then followed up with this:
'That was just embarrassing. I can understand a little bit what he was trying to do, but that's a not a very professional move. You ask a guy to fight. You don't jump a guy when his head is down taking a faceoff. That's pretty immature and childish. ''He's just, whatever. He's not happy with the way things are going and he was trying to get his team going. But there's no need for that.''So, Crosby claims he offered fair warning. McLean responds by saying he didn't understand what Crosby was saying. Boynton is still under the impression that Crosby flipped his lid and violated the code. In case you're wondering, these two teams meet again on March 5, in Florida.
Meanwhile, Eric McErlain asks via e-mail: with Gary Roberts gone, is there a veteran in that locker room who has the gravitas to take Crosby aside and tell him how far off track he's gone with both this latest infraction as well as smacking Valabick in the crotch?
That's actually a really good question, and my initial answer is, no, no there's not. Maybe Brooks Orpik. But that's about it.
But, as long as we're piling on Crosby, it's worth pointing out that he too has been in a slump recently, being held without a point in seven of his past 12 games. Just pointing it out, mainly because there's plenty of blame to go around for the Penguins recent struggles, Crosby included.

Terrible. Skew it however you want there buddy...LMAO. Crosby "naturally" claims, "if" Crosby really did challenge....what a pile of bunk. Total drivel.
It's hockey, not figure skating....McLean had no problem with it, he even offered a bit of praise, "he's their leader, their captain" so why do you have such a problem with it?
I stumbled upon this site by accident...never again, you owe me 2 minutes of my life back.

i think that crosby is such a baby, that this is all he can do, this is horrible fighting, he cant even fight right, he deserves at least 2 game suspension for this, maybe a hit in the crotch himself so he knows what it feels like..

Per Puck Daddy:
"We were talking early in the first period ... I asked him to go, he said 'yes'. Usually yes means yes. I wouldn't have wasted 20 minutes in the box for that ... I guess he didn't take me serious."
THE FIGHT HAPPENED LATE IN THE SECOND PERIOD!!!
What Crosby is saying is that he asked McLean if he wanted to go early in the game, then 25-30 minutes of game time later (probably closer to an hour, hour and a half of real time), he suddenly jumped him, and said that he knew it was coming! How the hell does this add up as even remotely defensible? Seriously?!?!?!

crosby is the pitts. his conduct is about as sportsmanlike as tyson biting his opponent's ear. nobody is gonna cry if he gets taken out for a long time or ends up with an accidental permament concussion. the problem is that nobody dares challenge the nhl on its bias or its over glamourized sindykidd... and there's nary a comparison between him and jags. the sabres are also noticing the biased calls and I can't see sindy taking on ruutu with the same tactics... sindy deserves a plaque right next to Chris Simon when it comes to gamesmanship and sportsmanlike conduct.

I'm a long time PENS fan but it is very difficult to like Sid, great skill and he always works hard, but he still whines too much, and this latest 'fight' is definitely embarrassing. I think he is a big reason for the bad chemistry this team has ... at least Malkin is likeable. I hope they trade Sid before his tade value disappears.

He's a baby - and he would get what's coming to him from some tough guys on other teams if the NHL didn't go so far out of his way to protect him. No one wants to get suspended for 5 games because they bump Crosby after the whistle.

I just saw the "fight", finally. Here in The Netherlands we really suck at playing hockey, but even we can see this really was pathetic.
Unbelievable.. What a pussy attack!
It's too obvious: Sid caught McLean by surprise and then did everything he could to avoid turning it into a real fight. He didn't even threw a real punch! Just pulling McLean to the ice asap, fight over.
Result: Sid didn't break his nails or got hurt, but the fans think #87 is a hard-nosed leader for their team.
Hollywood hockey!
Not the first time I´ve seen Crpsby acting tough without providing the goods. He is a very gifted player, but he's also a diver, cry baby and (I just got confirmed) a terrible fighter.
He surely wouldn´t be my choice for NHL banners and billboards...

What's everyone going to say when someone returns the favor to Sid with his head down playing the puck?
If you're going to have a premeditated fight, take your helmey/visor off.

Stop saying such bad things about crosby. Sometimes things happen on the ice and we don't necesserly know about those things. Maybe crosby's fight wasn't really fair but maybe mc lean had been looking for it. We do not know about this part of the story.
Why would Crosby be a baby? It has no links with what he did.

Being from Ft. Lauderdale and a Panther STH and watching and listening to Nick Boynton who is now on his fourth team - he spends too much time talking about others.
IMHO, Crosby took some frustration out not only from Pittsburgh's horrible play but also his own. And, the real crybaby's are the one's who continually cry about Crosby being a crybaby. It's amazing how many "men" claiming to be hockey fans can't appreciate such a good player. I'd take him on the Panthers in a NY minute. So would most teams.
What's really funny about all of this is that McLean didn't seem to have a problem - then you have real total a-h's who claim that Crosby's agent called to offer money. LOL... that poster should get the village idiot award.

I couldn't care less about the Pens so I don't follow Crosby too much, but what is the uproar.
Did he mug an unsuspecting opponent, without a doubt, but that wasn't even a fight. I didn't see an actually punch thrown.
His conduct wasn't as embarrassing as his fighting technique itself. You can even see McLean smirk at the end as if to say did that just really happen.

damn i'm tired of hearing these stupid fucking complaints about crosby that have nothing to do with the article. His points don't lie and neither does his defensive ability, disliking him because he whines doesn't change the fact that he's a great hockey player. His passes haven't been on par to malkin's lately, but his skill and creativity are undeniable

I saw the fight and thought it was pretty sad in the first place. I couldnt care less how he stacks up against Lemieux or Gretzky and how they have lost it before, because they never played for my team. What I do care about is the comparison of his "leadership" to that of Steve Yzerman. A man who dives continuously, and then does this kinda crap does not deserve any comparison to a true leader like Stevie Y.
As far as his playing ability goes, sure he is good. and so is Malkin but the Pens are in 9th right now. And his defensive ability isnt good at all. Ill take Datsyuk who is +16 or Ovechkin who has more points than Crosby and is +12 over Crosbys little +5 anyday.
Plain fact is Crosby is overated...Ive been saying that since Ovie beat him their first year.

Why is everyone making such a big deal of this. Yes it was a pansy attack, Crosby is a pansy player, I think Ovechkin is a lot tougher than Sid, he would destroy Sid in a fight. But Boynton will take care of Sid next time they play and then that will be that, end of story. The Panthers have nothing to play for anyway, so I doubt Boynton would mind taking a 5 gamer for going after Sid. Boynton will take care of Sid, someone will try and fight Boynton then, and then its over.
