Newsmakers in the NHL: Buffalo Snaps Boston's Winning Streak

Thanks to a pair of goals from Matt Ellis, the Buffalo Sabres ended Boston's 10-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory at TD Banknorth Garden on Saturday afternoon. The loss not only snaps Boston's 10-game winning streak, it also ended a 14-game home winning streak, while also giving the Bruins their sixth regulation loss of the season.

Ellis opened the scoring for the Sabres just three minutes into regulation, while Thomas Vanek added his 26th goal of the season just two minutes later.

After Phil Kessel cut the deficit in half with his 24th goal of the season, Ellis added his second goal of the game early in the second period to score what proved to be the game-winner. Paul Gaustad added his fourth goal of the year for the Sabres, while Ryan Miller turned aside 29 shots in net.

The win for Buffalo, combined with Pittsburgh's loss to Florida, moved the Sabres into the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Panthers 6, Penguins 1:
... We've already talked about the mayhem that was the Penguins-Panthers game today, as Florida snapped a four-game losing streak with a 6-1 romp in Pittsburgh. Nathan Horton scored a pair of goals for the Panthers, while the Penguins made two goalie changes over the course of the game, and head coach (for now) Michel Therrien didn't hesitate to place the blame on Marc-Andre Fleury and Dany Sabourin:
Goaltending was a big part of today's game. Both of those guys didn't do the job. You can't win in this league without solid goaltending. In the game in Boston we gave up three goals on three shots. We were behind the eight ball. Today I thought we were ready to play. We had a good first period, but we were down by two and we made the goalie change. By the time we got a chance it was 4-1. It's pretty tough to win.
It's a difficult team to watch right now.

Flames 3, Predators 2: ... Thanks to a pair of goals in the final eight minutes of regulation, including a game-winning tally from Todd Bertuzzi with 24 seconds to play, the Flames pulled out a 3-2 win in Nashville on Saturday night. Curtis Glencross also scored for Calgary, while Miika Kiprusoff made 24 saves. Craig Conroy, with his assist on Bertuzzi's game-winning goal, collected his 500th NHL point.

Capitals 2, Rangers 1: ... Fresh off his snub from the All-Star starting lineup, Alex Ovechkin scored a shorthanded goal late in the second period to help lift the Capitals to a 2-1 win over the Rangers. Washington is as hot as any team in the league right now, winning 11 of its past 12 games, including six in a row. Petr Prucha scored his third goal of the season for the Rangers to give them a 1-0 lead midway through the second period, only to have Mike Green answer with a power play goal just over a minute later. Alexander Semin and Marc Staal also had a rather interesting fight.

Maple Leafs 3, Senators 1: ... The Maple Leafs take the battle of Ontario with a 3-1 win over Ottawa. Vesa Toskala turned aside 30 shots in the win, while Dominic Moore, Alexie Ponikarovsky and Jason Blake provided the offense.

Hurricanes 3, Lightning 2: ... It appears as if things are returning to normal down in Tampa Bay, as the Lightning dropped their third game in a row. Carolina erased an early 2-0 deficit and rallied for a 3-2 win Saturday night, thanks to goals from Justin Williams, Chad LaRose and Joni Pitkanen.

Red Wings 3, Wild 2: ... Owen Nolan and Antti Miettinen scored a pair of goals just 51 seconds into the third period, giving Minnesota a 2-1 lead over visiting Detroit. The lead held until the 15:23 mark of the period, when Johan Franzen scored his 18th goal of the season, ultimately sending the game to overtime. Pavel Datsyuk scored the lone goal in a shootout -- in spectacular fashion -- helping lead the Red Wings to a 3-2 win. Minnesota is 4-6-1 in its past 11 games.

Blues 5, Blue Jackets 2
: ... Columbus goalie Steve Mason had perhaps his worst game of the season, giving up five goals on 27 shots, as the Blue Jackets fell in St. Louis, 5-2. It's the first time this season Mason has allowed more than four goals in a game, while the loss also snaps Columbus' four-game winning streak.

Oilers 4, Stars 1: ... Dwayne Roloson stopped 38-of-39 shots for Edmonton on Saturday night, helping lead the Oilers to a 4-1 win over Dallas. The Oilers were outshot by a 39-19 margin, and still ended up winning by three goals due in large part to the play of Roloson. The fact Marty Turco gave up four goals on just 19 shots certainly helped the cause as well. Can we just let him mulligan this season?

Sharks 5, Islanders 3: ... For the second straight game it was simply a case of too little, too late for the Islanders, as a late third period rally came up short as they fell in San Jose, 5-3. Mike Grier scored a pair of goals for the Sharks, while Ryane Clowe, Patrick Marleau and Dan Boyle also scored.

Kings 2, Flyers 1: The Flyers may have lost in a shootout, 2-1, but the fact they earned a point in the standings allows them to take over sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division. Pretty impressive considering they started the season 5-6-3. Jonathan Quick continued his strong play in net for the Kings, turning aside 31 shots in overtime and regulation, before stopping Mike Richards and Jeff Carter in the shootout. Wayne Simmonds scored the lone Kings goal in regulation, while Patrick O'Sullivan and Dustin Brown scored in the shootout to earn the win.
