A strange story came out of last week's Winter Classic, in which an unscrupulous fan apparently robbed a 14-year-old of a prized gift from one of the NHL's biggest stars. The Chicago Tribune has the story of how Kalan Plew of suburban Gurnee was waiting above the third-base dugout when he was hoping to get a high-five from one his favorite Wings, but Henrik Zetterberg gave him more than that, handing over his game-used stick to the young fan.
Then, the story gets odd. By the time Plew's father met his young son after the game outside the gates, he was in tears.
According to the story, a man dressed as a security guard told Plew that he wouldn't be allowed to carry the stick without his parents present, so he could pick it up at the customer relations office.
Trouble is, when Plew got there, they told him no one left the stick there, and so the boy had apparently was duped out of a prized possession.
"I don't understand a person who could do this," Marc Plew, the boy's father, told the paper.
After some fact-checking, Zetterberg did recall handing a young fan his stick following the game, and the team plans to make it up to him after learning of what happened to him.
Still, it's hard to imagine someone low enough to steal a prized possession from a kid that way, since while the Wings can make it up to him, it still isn't enough to shine the memory that he tarnished.
