Newsmakers in the NHL: San Jose Beats Detroit, Maintains Top Spot in West

Fantastic game in San Jose between the top two teams in the Western Conference, as the Sharks and Red Wings entered Saturday's tilt separated by just one point in the standings. In a game that featured 11 goals and 75 shots on goal, San Jose emerged with a 6-5 win, extending its lead to three points for the top spot in the conference.

Patrick Marleau's goal with 6:36 to play in regulation proved to the be the game-winner, while Detroit goalie Chris Osgood surrendered six goals on 42 shots. Ryane Clowe picked up four assists for the Sharks, while Milan Michalek registered a goal and an assist in the win.

Stars 3, Kings 2: Marty Turco stopped all three shots he faced in a shootout to help lead Dallas to a 3-2 win over Los Angeles. Jere Lehtinen and Mike Ribeiro scored in regulation for the Stars, while Ribeiro added the game-winner in the opening round of the shootout.

Capitals 2, Bruins 1: In a battle of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference, Alexander Semin scored an unassisted goal at the 11:48 mark of the third period to help lead Washington to a 2-1 win over Boston.

Sabres 3, Hurricanes 1: I'd love to see what Tim Connolly could accomplish over a full season, and some of his talents were on display Saturday night as he picked up a pair of goals in the Sabres 3-1 win over Carolina. Ryan Miller turned aside 36 shots in net to pick up the win for Buffalo.

Devils 3, Islanders 1: The Devils took advantage of the Islanders confusing goaltending situation, taking a 3-1 decision against New York. Zach Parise, David Clarkson and Travis Zajac provided the offense for New Jersey, while Scott Clemmensen made 32 saves in goal.

Panthers 4, Lightning 3: Florida scored three consecutive goals in the second period, including the game-winner from Jay Bouwmeester with one second remaining in the period, to cap off a 4-3 comeback win against Tampa Bay. Bouwmeester finished with a goal and an assist, while Tomas Vokoun made 22 saves in relief of starter Craig Anderson. Steven Stamkos, the No. 1 overall pick in the NHL draft this year, was a healthy scratch for Tampa Bay.

Thrashers 7, Predators 2: Rough night for Nashville, as the Predators were pounded, 7-2, by Atlanta. Dan Ellis earned the start in goal and was lifted after giving up three goals on the first four shots he faced. Pekka Rinne didn't fair much better, surrendering four goals on 28 shots. Zach Bogosian, the No. 3 pick in this year's draft, scored his first career goal for Atlanta, while Rich Peverley registered three assists against the team that waived him a week ago.

Blackhawks 2, Blues 1: Martin Havlat scored the game-winner 1:23 into overtime, helping the Blackhawks to a 2-1 win over St. Louis. Cristobal Huet made 27 saves for Chicago, which has won three of its past four games.

Canadiens 5, Senators 4
: Ottawa scored a pair of goals late in the third period forcing overtime against Montreal, only to have the Canadiens take it in a shootout, 5-4.

Ducks 3, Wild 0: Corey Perry scored a pair of goals for the Ducks, while Bobby Ryan continued his fantastic rookie campaign by scoring his 13th goal of the season in Anaheim's 3-0 win over Minnesota. Jonas Hiller made 30 saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season.

Coyotes 4, Flames 3: David Hale scored his second career goal in 244 games to help lead the Coyotes to a 4-3 win over Calgary. Peter Mueller and Mikkel Boedker also scored for Phoenix, while Olli Jokinen netted his 16th of the season.
