Peter Forsberg won't be coming back to rescue the Avalanche - or any other NHL team - this year, the Swedish star announced on television Friday. While the 2003 Hart Trophy winner and two-time Stanley Cup champion has been testing out his ankle that has bothered him lately, he told Sweden's SVT television network today that if he does play at all this year, it'll be in that nation's elite league, not the NHL.
"There won't be any NHL this season, that's totally clear. If I can play it will be in the (Swedish) Elite Series and Modo."
Last year, Forsberg returned to the NHL after a half-season resting, but he still was hobbled with injuries and only appeared in nine regular-season games with Colorado - even though he registered 14 points in those contests. He added five points in the Avs' first-round win over the Wild, but could only play in one game of the second-round series against Detroit before missing the rest of the Red Wings sweep.
Since the lockout, Forsberg hasn't appeared in more than 60 games in a year, and this year's setback certainly makes fans wonder if they've seen the last of the 35-year-old Forsberg in an NHL uniform.
