Avalanche 4, Flames 3: Colorado ended a four-game losing streak with its win over Calgary on Monday night, thanks in large part to a three-point effort from Marek Svatos. Svatos chipped in two goals (including the eventual game-winner late in the second period) and added an assist, while Ryan Smyth registered a pair of helpers in the win. Peter Budaj was strong in net for the Avalanche, turning aside 36 of 39 shots to pick up his 14th win over the season.
Ducks 3, Sabres 2: Chris Kunitz and Corey Perry each scored a goal in the third period to help lead Anaheim to a 3-2 win over Buffalo. Teemu Selanne and Steve Montador each picked up a pair of assists in the win, while Jonas Hiller made 21 saves. Anaheim finished the night 2-for-3 with the man advantage (with both goals coming in the third period) while outshooting Buffalo 32-13 over the second and third periods.
Red Wings 4, Blues 3: Marian Hossa scored a pair of goals (plus the game-winner in the shootout) for Detroit in its 4-3 win over St. Louis. The win snaps a five-game losing skid for Detroit. With the Wings leading, 3-2, midway through the third period, defenseman Andreas Lilja was handed a five-minute major for boarding (plus a game misconduct) Blues forward David Backes. After nearly killing off the entire five minutes, Blues defenseman Barret Jackman tied the game, sending it to overtime. Matt Saler has more on this game.
Penguins Forward Tyler Kennedy Suspended
Pittsburgh forward Tyler Kennedy has been suspended one-game by the NHL for his fight with Toronto defenseman Luke Schenn on Saturday night. Suspended for a fight, you say? Well, technically, here's the rule violation:
Kennedy was suspended per Rule 70.2 which states: "A player who has entered the game on a legal line change... who starts an altercation may be subject to discipline ..."The altercation began near the benches and resulted in Kennedy and Schenn emerging from a pile of players to do a one-on-one battle in the Toronto zone. Schenn, a player with a pretty nice size advantage, ended up getting the best of him.
Luca Caputi has been called up from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to replace Kennedy for the Penguins game against Montreal on Tuesday night.
