Newsmakers in the NHL: Red Wings Pound Oilers

Red Wings 8, Oilers 3: Here's a fun fact: at the end of the first period of Saturday's Detroit-Edmonton game, the Red Wings had as many goals (five), as the Oilers had shots. One word can sum this up: domination. The Wings continued to pour it on, completing an 8-3 thrashing of Edmonton at Joe Louis Arena.

It's the second time in just over a week that the Oilers have been on the wrong end of a blowout, getting steamrolled by Buffalo, 10-2, back on January 27. The Oilers have now lost four of six, while the Red Wings extended their modest winning streak to three as they head into their NBC tilt with the Penguins on Sunday.

Flyers 4, Bruins 3: Philadelphia overcame a 3-1 deficit in Boston on Saturday, rallying to pull out a 4-3 overtime win against the Bruins. Randy Jones scored the game-winner at the 3:00 mark of the extra period, snapping Boston's four-game winning streak.

Ducks 2, Flames 1: Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan each tallied goals in the Ducks 2-1 win over Calgary, while J.S. Giguere turned aside 26-of-27 shots in net. Ryan's goal was his 18th of the season, tying him with Dallas' James Neal for the league lead among rookies.

Maple Leafs 5, Canadiens 2: The Maple Leafs and Canadiens did a fine job picking up where they left off in their most recent meeting, racking up 68 penalty minutes in Toronto's 5-2 win. Unfortunately, Mikhail Grabovki and Sergei Kostitsyn failed to complete their epic schoolyard skirmish, mainly because they were never on the ice at the same time. Darn shame, if you ask me.

Blue Jackets 3, Sharks 2: Hold the phone, San Jose lost its third game in a row. Led by Dan LaCosta making his first NHL start, Columbus pulled out a 3-2 overtime win against the Sharks. LaCosta turned aside 28-of-30 shots in the win, while Christian Backman scored the game-winner in overtime.

Senators 3, Sabres 2: Despite blowing a 2-0 lead in the third period, Ottawa managed to take a 3-2 shootout decision against Buffalo on Saturday. Ryan Miller made 40 saves through overtime for the Sabres, while Brian Elliot stopped 28 shots for Ottawa in the win.

Capitals 3, Panthers 1: Thanks to a pair of third period goals from Mike Green, the Capitals managed to beat Florida, 3-1. Green now has 19 goals on the season, which is a large reason as to why he drives these fancy wheels.

Lightning 1, Islanders 0: Mike McKenna stopped all 28 shot he faced for Tampa Bay to claim his first career shutout in a 1-0 win over the Islanders. Gary Roberts scored the game's only goal at the 13:34 mark of the third period. Not only was it McKenna's first career shutout, it was also his first win. Welcome to the NHL.

Kings 3, Devils 1: Thanks to a three goal explosion in the second period, Los Angeles went into Newark on Saturday night and exited with a 3-1 win over the Devils. The Kings have now won six of their past seven games.

Blues 4, Avalanche 1: After Chris Stewart gave Colorado a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, St. Louis responded with four consecutive goals on their way to a 4-1 win.

Hurricanes 7, Coyotes 2: Thanks to seven goals from six different players, the Hurricanes kept pace in the tight playoff race in the Eastern Conference with a 7-2 win in Phoenix.

Canucks 7, Blackhawks 3: Vancouver picked up its second consecutive victory thanks to a 7-3 win over Chicago. Ryan Kesler scored a pair of goals, while Mats Sundin added his fourth of the season for the Canucks.

Minor Trade Between Carolina and Tampa Bay

After placing him on waivers for a second time this season, the Tampa Bay Lightning finally managed to move forward Jussi Jokinen, sending him to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Josef Melichar, forward Wade Brookbank and a fourth-round pick in 2009.

Jokinen, 25, has been good for about 14-15 goals per season during the first three years of his career, but has struggled throughout the 2008-09 season, registering only six goals in 46 games.
