Late Friday afternoon, the Islanders and Senators agreed to swap three players and a draft pick, a move that made waves across the blogosphere. The basic breakdown of the deal seemed to be Chris Campoli for a first round pick, as the other two parts -- Mike Comrie and Dean McAmmond -- were very similar. They both have contracts that expire this summer and weren't doing a whole lot of anything offensively for their teams. Given that both teams should be trying to stockpile draft picks (let's face it, whether or not Bryan Murray knows it, that's what the Senators should be doing), they're going to be looking to trade off veteran assets of value. So, could we see McAmmond and/or Comrie get moved again before the March 4th trade deadline?
Absolutely they could -- and probably should -- be traded.
Why the Senators had initial interest in Comrie is beyond me. Maybe they think he can help get them back in the playoff race. More likely, they didn't have any interest at all. I figure Islanders' GM Garth Snow probably said something to the effect of "you can have Campoli, but you need to take Comrie off our hands."
It's no secret that the Islanders have been looking to unload their veterans for draft picks. It's also no secret that Comrie was one of those players. Now, maybe it looked like they weren't going to be able to get anything for him and wanted to make sure they got something. That something being McAmmond.
If I'm Snow, I'm turning around and trying to get whatever I can for McAmmond. He's no use to a last place team long out of the playoff race. Most likely, he won't garner more than a third or fourth round pick from any team, but hey, that could always turn into something. After all, Campoli was a seventh round pick.
If I'm Senators' GM Bryan Murray, I'm trying to turn Comrie into picks as well. He's probably going to be leaving in the summer and has been playing poorly all year. And, even if we think we're still in this playoff race, Comrie shouldn't have much of an impact on it. Trying to unload him could prove more difficult (or a damnation of the move just made) but would be worth it.

McAmmond asked to be traded because he was not getting any ice time. If you're not getting ice time on a team that's at the bottom of the league in scoring, you're not exactly going to get a lot of ice time anywhere else. Comrie missed a lot of games this season and still managed to maintain a decent PPG average on a horrible team. He is not a power forward but he can play all three positions on the top two lines for most teams. To say that he was traded for McAmmond is ridiculous, as is saying that Snow had to move him (a UFA) to make room for a rebuild. Basically, it's Campoli (a decent PP QB with intriguing upside) and some legitimate secondary scoring for a late, late 1st round pick. I don't think McAmmond has a lot of value except perhaps to a playoff bound team that needs security against injuries.
