As we continue to wrap up our coverage of Sunday's awesome Penguins-Capitals game, it's worth taking another look at Sidney Crosby's goal in the first period of Pittsburgh's 4-3 shootout win. Not only the goal, but the "aggressive" back-checking of Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin.
I like Alex Ovechkin. I appreciate the world-class talent he brings to the NHL, he's exciting to watch, and unlike Don Cherry, I don't care if he celebrates after scoring goals (don't like it? Don't let him score). Having said that, come on, man! You have to back-check better than that!
If you watched Sunday's game, particularly the closing moments of the second period when Ovechkin went on his coast-to-coast sprint to beat the buzzer, you could see he's certainly fast enough to get himself back into that play. Even if he couldn't, he at least has to make the effort.
Let's just hope this was a one-time error by one of the best players in the league.

well too late cause many more people love Ovie over Crosby

I'd take Ovechkin on my team also, but I'd also get a coach that would hound him until he made an effort at playing defense. If anybody has seen him play in person this half-assed effort isn't uncommon for him. If he doesn't want to put forth the effort to get back on D because he wants to save himself he'd be better off hopping over the boards and sitting on the bench.

@ Jason K
I actually see him play live at every single home game (and every away game) and see the exact opposite. this season he is +12 in part bc he scores goals, but also in part bc he plays defense. ALOT of local media attention has highlighted the balance of his game the last two seasons, mostly bc he has improved his defensive play.

Despite my screen name, I have coached (and refereed) the game for a very long time...even at the professional level.
Anyone care to explain to me why Ovechkin needs to be backchecking in the linked video? There are two players and a goaltender back for the Capitals already!
So, instead of picking on Ovechkin...why not ask where in the hell the second defenseman was in this play??? That's what I would be doing as the coach!

Why MUST one be better at the expense of the other. They are BOTH incredibly talented and gifted players. Different but a delight to watch.....Both. Can't we just enjoy their skills? It is like saying Bach sucks but Mozart rules. Different but both amazing talents. ENJOY lest you miss the beauty!

NHL fact of life: Crosby plays big in big games; Ovechkin and Malkin play small.

You Crap fans are so funny. Bringing your pacifiers to the game. I guess you all knew you would be needing them after your loss? Do you think Crosby cares what you think of him? You can keep your over dramatic Alexandria who is all about "me, me, me". I would much rather have Crosby and Malkin who actually know how to share the puck. The Penguins are a hockey "team". Maybe one of you can explain what that word means to your "star".

Not to play the whole 'scoreboard' thing, but um...if the Penguins are such a great "team" why exactly are they 10 points behind the Caps and tied for 8th place with the Rangers?
Nice win on Sunday...you sure salvaged the season series against the Caps. Taking 2 out of 8 points while the Caps took 7 of 8! Nice job!

Read my post man. Ovie is the best player in the league, and Crsoby can't deal with that.

Hey Jeff,
Whats the matter did you lose your pacifier? Or did you give it to Alexandria after the game Sunday? Maybe thats why he wasn't crying about the refs THIS time? And as far as I know, even great "teams" can have a bad season. But great teams find a way to come back and win games, which is what the Penguins are doing right now. I think our winning streak is 6? What is the Craps winning streak? OH wait, I think you have lost 4 in a row? And when I was at the game, I looked high and low for all your championship flags but didn't see any....where are they? Are they hanging somewhere with the Redskins championship flags? OH wait they don't have any either...HaHa! And honestly even if the Penguins don't make the play offs THIS year, they are still a great team. Don't think for one second your jealousy can change that. And no matter what you say, Alexandria is and always will be a me, me, me player... And if you wanna bring up points, we have 12 from our last 6 games, how many did you get from you last 6 games, 5? I believe momentum is a powerful thing going into the playoffs, wouldn't you agree?

poti's mistake on this goal. got lost on a misguided rush. his job to know when and when not to go forward, and the center's job to cover for him.

ovechkin definetly back checks more than most other scorers, but based on the play he could've been tired( prolly not but i'll throw it out there) and/or he was completely out of the play anyways....ovechkin has the most heart on the team so its not a question of less desire or anything
did anyone catch pardon the interruption the other day...Tony Kornhiser said you can't spell crosby without cry, lol great stuff.

jib,
Thanks for the death wish. Kinda taking your hockey a little serious aren't ya? Wish I could say "sorry I got under your skin", but I am not sorry at all. I think it's funny. And this is exactly the kind of response I would expect from a low life Craps fan. HaHa. And by the way, if you were so smart you would know girls can't BE fags.....and what exactly does JIB mean - Just in Butt?????...maybe fag is something you hear all the time so you just automatically think everyone is one...

Steelers have 6 SB's.
Skins have 3 plus 2 before the SB = 5
and the trophies (not flags) wouldn't be at Verizon Center because they're different sports and organizations.
Pens have 2 Stanleys and have been around
8 years longer than the Caps. Give us 8 years.
You should be a more gracious guest, penis or no penis.
@Gretz - this post is a cheap shot. 8 is indisputably the best all around hockey player in the NHL. Show the clip from last night where he saved a goal by chasing down a breakaway. in the above clip he was 1) playing hurt (heel), and 2) completely out of the play. Poor journalism.

@ dlm, keep the posts coming. funny when someone without a penis gets so much negative feedback. not your fault you didn't go back 17 years to find a supebowl win for the skins. and never be gracious when someone wishes you dead.
@ evan, nice of you to come out of the woodwork 4 days after the article was wriiten. took you that long to find something good to say about your "GOD"?

@ Steve,
Ha Ha, thanks Steve, but I am giving up here. These Crap fans take everything so serious, like just cause I don't have a penis, Evan assumes I don't know that hockey & football are two different sports. I was making a point. All we hear over and over is how Crosby and the Penguins suck, Crosby is a crybaby, blah, blah, blah. And they act like our series against them named them Stanley Cup champions. They are getting to be even worse than some other fans (you know who I mean).... so I am done, but will leave with a question, What religion to you practice when your "God" is Alexandria Ovechkin?

while i agree he may be coasting, but the third man back in a backcheck is suppose to roam the middle of the slot, and look for the third man and that is exactly where he is going. all the great ones do mostly the same thing.

Im neither a Caps nor Pens fan, but watching fans of these teams go nutzoid over each others stars is a bit comical. Lost in translation is the fact that Malkin is probably better than both of them, for he is neither the NHL approved golden child, nor the sharpshooting celebrate every goal like it was his last on earth freakjob. This guy does BOTH things well, and never suckers up to the media for glory points, when he really should, hes easily as good an assist man as Crosby is, and can score goals at will like Alex.
Moving to Columbus, OH has only served to bolster my sad mancrush on Rick Nash, so that's my player to enjoy on ice, but honestly guys, let it go....Malkin's the REAL deal here.
