There are two things I will never understand about sports fans: 1) why the sight of a fan in an opposing jersey will lead to physical conflict, and 2) why they would be willing to spend $8.50 for a beer only to hurl it in the direction of another fan.
Here we find some video from a Vancouver Canucks game that features both acts of idiocy.
After some incredibly weak slaps and idle threats of "YOU BETTER SIT DOWN," the Maple Leafs fan, nicknamed "Grizzly" by the fans in the surrounding seats, decides to take his $8.50 cup of Molson and douse the guy sitting two rows back. They were probably fighting over Mats Sundin.
When I wear my team's sweater into an opposing building I expect to hear some trash talk. That's part of it, and as long as it doesn't turn physical or cross any "lines" I have no problem with it. I've never found myself in a situation where I was on the brink of throwing down with another fan.
I've also never considering throwing my beer. Hell, I spent $8.50 for a Labatt's at a Penguins game on Tuesday night and spilled a couple of drops on the way back to my seat. I felt bad about it because I knew I was cheating myself. As if I wasn't already cheating myself by paying $8.50 for a watered down Labatt's.

Labatt = yuck. Surely the Pens can come up with a better beer then that. They should be paying you to drink that swill :)

I recently took my 7 year old son to see both of our first NHL hockey game in Vancouver a couple weeks back (Dallas vs. Vancouver). We were visiting from Texas, and thought what a great time to see a hockey game in hockey crazy Canada. Of course, me and the boy were for Dallas, as we are from Texas. I was toold several times by many people not to worry, as the fans are well behaved, but passionate. I thought, I hope these fans are not like Philly fans, total drunk losers looking for a fight. Anyway, it couldnt have been a better experience. We were treated well, and folks sitting near us gave us the inside scoop on the teams. When Dallas scored (which is apparently rare these days) we were the only people in the sold out arena that cheered. People looked at us a little odd, but what do you expect. Never felt threatened. The guy in the video was most likely a drunk loudmouth, who offended everyone around him. Is it really smart to dress in your teams jersey in an opposing arena, then pop off to everyone around you. Dont think so. Go ACanucks, you have two fans in Texas. By the way, we loved Vancouver, is there a more beautiful city? Having Whistler down the road doesnt hurt either.
