Just one day after signing his new contract extension, Boston's Tim Thomas stopped all 31 shots he faced to pick up a 1-0 shutout win over the New York Rangers. He also made some highlights with another epic meltdown, this one sparked by Rangers super-pest Sean Avery.
During a stoppage in play, Avery skated up behind Thomas and "accidentally" hit him on the back of his mask with his stick. Thomas, as you can see, decided to respond by chasing Avery from behind, and then feeding Fredrik Sjostrom a face full of blocker. Both players received two-minute minors for roughing.
Of all the goalies currently playing in the NHL, Thomas is probably the last one I'd try to annoy, seeing as how he has a relatively short fuse. Consider Montreal's Andrei Kostitsyn as Exhibit A:
And Toronto's Jason Blake as Exhibit B:
Blake Wheeler scored the only goal of the game, his 21st of the season, helping lead Boston to its sixth win in a row. Thomas made 31 saves.

Sean Avery did not accidentally do anything. Watch the video before you post your stories moron. Other two Tim Thomas plays uncalled for. If Sean Avery did that to me I probably would have nailed him with ym stick. Thomas definatelly kept his cool.

I know he didn't do accidentally. That's why I put "accidentally" in quotation marks.

You beat me to the punch with your comment, Adam Gretz. Just what I was going to post...when something is put in quotation marks, it is something open to interpretation. The first one to comment on this SHOULD have known what you meant, duh?!?!!

WHEN?? is this nut Avery going to learn??? The NHL, and everyone would be better off without him. I don't blame Thomas at all for reacting as he did. There is no place in hockey for these kinds of antics, especially when you are trying to help your team win games and make the playoffs. Sean, obviously learned nothing....would you do EVERYONE a favor Sean, and just BE-GONE!!?!?!??

Avery is nothing but a sackless weasel. That film should go right to the league office, this MF is never gonna learn till someone beats him to within an inch of his life.If he was on my team his antics would embarass me,he should get a blanket party.

To wonderfuljoey...no disrespect intended on my part, what when a word or phrase is put in quoation marks, it is open to interpretation but GENERALLY means just the opposite. That is why Adam Gretz put accidentally in quotes...he didn't think it was an accident either. But I just don't know when the NHL draws the line on this guy. AVERY'S ANTICS, OVER AND OVER only show his disrespect of other player's, his own team and of the game of hockey in general.

I seem to share the same opinion of Sean Avery as everyone else.My question is this: When is the league going to take a more pro-active stance toward total intolerance here? He seems to get nothing but a slap on the wrist every time he tries to instigate trouble. The NHL commisioner,Gary Bettman, needs to put an end to the goonery that is Sean Avery ,once and for all.Perhaps, sitting out for a year might be a step in the right direction. His behavior has no place in hockey,or for that matter, professional sports in general. It degrades what is a great sport, and certainly sets a poor example for the next generation of players to follow. His behavior has no place in hockey, and ,my opinion is that he should be banned from the sport for an indefinite period.Teams should think twice before even considering adding him to their roster.Just ask the Dallas Stars if they regret ever having him on their roster. They were wise to make it the Ranger's problem.Does anyone here really think that his presence on the Ranger's roster is a positive? Here is a team attempting to roll into the post season on a positive note, and they have someone here who will nothing except derail the train the same way he did in Dallas.
The referee made a poor decision when he assessed matching penalties to both he and Tim Thomas.I'm not saying that Thomas shouldn't have gotten a roughing penalty for responding ,but the correct call should have been to put the Bruins on the power play.Avery should have gotten an additional two minute penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. That would have sent a much more definitive message ,that antics such as this are not acceptable in the NHL......................

"His behavior has no place in hockey", huh? are you trying to tell me that a sport , that regularly engages in fist fights, is a gentleman's game? he's not the first and he won't be the last to commit these "antics", so get over yourself.banned, lol.

Tim Thomas did not ,in this instance ,instigate the altercation. For the record,I have never claimed that tim Thomas is an angel.,I have seen him ,on more than one occasion,go out of his way to tag an oposing player.Steve Avery has a long history of this stuff.
This type of goonery needs to be addressed across the board ,and that includes Tim Thomas.I understand that we are not playing tennis here,Brian. While I appreciate your opinion, and ,it does have considerable merit in the case of Tim Thomas as well,I would appreciate you not talking about this issue in a way that degrades me as a human being....................

Hockey is a physical sport;very much so.And ,fighting is a natural by product of two teams engaging in high stakes night after night, for 82 games. The issue concerning Steve Avery goes beyond merely the fighting aspect of the game.Skating up behind someone and tapping them on the back of the head in order to instigate a brawl is not hockey,Brian .It goes way beyond getting under an opposing player's skin, whic,I understand ,is another natural by product of the game.By no means am I saying that getting under an opponent's skin has no place in the game. We're not playing tennis,I agree.But.......c'mon,Brian.............don't sell such bullshit to me ,and call it a necessary part of the game.

There needs to be in place, a more definitive punishment for that kind of stuff. All it takes is for one player to be seriously injured,or worse. We can recite Ted Green -Wayne Maki, and a host of other examples as proof. What never should have happened resulted in a wild stick -swinging incident that left Ted Green with a fractured skull.Brian .....do you really think that escalating something into such an act of violence is a necessary part of the game?Let me know if you do................

Sean Avery is a goon and a disgrace to hockey. Why the Rangers took him back is beyond me. Serves them right if they miss they playoffs. They should have gone after a real hockey player instead of this jerk.

chuck, my apologies if i offended you, but you have to agree that way too much attention is being paid to avery when there are a multitude of "agitators" out there. i think when you use the fractured skull thing as an example you have to admit that the responder is in less control of his emotions than the agitator, which leads me to believe he should be banned for life. unfotunately todd betruzzi continues to play and i feel what he did is worse than anything avery has ever done. chris simon/holloweg viscious as it was he continues to be eligible to play. i'm just sick of the avery witch hunt that everyone has joined.
