Let there be no question that the St. Louis Blues have character. They have guts. They have fire. Oh, and they have some great young players who will only get better as the years go by.Trailing 2-0 in the game and 3-0 in the series, the Blues showed zero quit, rallying to tie the score on two second-period goals, and then getting some great goaltending from Chris Mason, who dueled with Roberto Luongo through a scoreless third period. That duel continued deep into overtime, before Alex Burrows scored his second of the game to eliminate St. Louis, 3-2.
After Burrows and Kyle Wellwood had tallied for the Canucks, a lesser team, even one full with young, hungry players, would have packed it in. The Blues had every reason to, after two heartbreaking losses and an amazingly frustrating start to the tournament.
Instead, St. Louis rallied, behind goals by Brad Boyes and David Perron about four minutes apart in the second period. The Blues were at their best from the second period on, peppering Luongo with pucks and bodies. However, their dormant power play never woke up, and Luongo was on top of his game all night.
The Blues had six criticial minutes in the overtime. Daniel Sedin took a two-minute hooking penalty, and Ryan Kesler was sent off for four minutes on a high stick. The power plays both came up empty, despite some good pressure and shots.
As they had been the whole series, the Canucks' penalty kill - keyed by Luongo and his tough defense - made the difference. Luongo made 47 saves, including 18 in overtime. With 19 seconds left, Burrows came down the right wing and beat Mason five-hole to end the series.
It's a learning experience for St. Louis, who lost their two best defensemen (Erik Johnson and Eric Brewer) to injury but still battled to a playoff spot. They'll be back.
For Vancouver, it's a timely sweep. They can rest some banged-up players, as they're looking at up to ten days off. That's probably too much, and it leaves them running the risk of being rusty for the second round. But no one will ever turn down a sweep in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

I've been saying this for a few weeks now, the Canucks are the team of destiny this year. We have the best goalie in the league, arguably the best defensive core and four solid lines of balanced scoring.
I think St. Louis would have probably beaten San Jose if they finished in eight, but as they swept into the playoffs smoking hot they were unfortunate to draw Vancouver.
I think the Blues are poised to have a great team for the next few years, but this year belongs to us.

The Canucks might be the team to beat in the west. Anytime you have a guy like Luongo in net the confidence level of the entire team go's way up.

plain and simple, the blues could not skate with the canucks. they did not play smart as a team.
the canucks played well and deserved the sweep against the blues.

To say that the Blues couldn't skate with the Canucks is just an Ignorant statement. The Blues could have won the series if not for the poor power play execution. Hand it to the Canucks for a great scheme against the Blues. Another example, Game 4 should not have even gone to Overtime. The Canucks got a gift from the refs on the "No Goal". But that's the breaks of the game. 49 Shots in that game too, but I guess they couldn't skate with them? Too funny :)
Congrats to the Nucks! Congrats to the Blues on a great season as well!!

i ll say it a second time, the blues could not skate with the canucks. if they could they would have won at least one game. inexperience was the other reason the blues did not win a game. i watched the 5 on 3 the blues had in game 3. as great a goalie as mason is, he should not have tapped the puck up, he should have passed it up the ice to get the power play moving. i picked the blues to win that series, the were hot the last week of the season and ended up seeded 6th. they jumped over anaheim and the blue jackets. then they hit the wall.
