The Detroit Red Wings are having their way with the Columbus Blue Jackets in their Western Conference Quarterfinal series, jumping out to a commanding 3-0 lead thanks to a 4-1 win on Tuesday night. Speaking of which, midway through the second period, Detroit's Brad Stuart dished out a crushing (and clean) hit on Columbus' R.J. Umberger.
While you never want to see players injured to the point where they struggle to get back on their feet, that's just a good, clean, hard hit by Stuart. For Umberger, it had to be a rather painful case of deja vu as it brought back visions of the hit he received from Brian Campbell during the 2006 Eastern Conference playoffs.
Good news, though, as Umberger was able to not only return to the game, but also score a goal late in the third period, ending Chris Osgood's shutout bid. Through the opening three games of the series, Umberger is the only Blue Jackets player to score a goal (he has two) while they've been outscored by a 12-2 margin.

can't do anything when its a clean hit. its a better series than the scores indicate, although nash has disappeared, mason has kept this series close. the physical play of the blue jackets has not been effective against the red wings.

Mason has kept it close? Is 4-1, 4-0, 4-1 close?

As a wings fan i watched the game on FSN Detroit and i just now saw the FSN Ohio highlight with FSN Ohio Commentators. I love how they tried to spin the hit as "nasty" when it clearly was clean and just a good hit. Stuart kept his elbow in and didn't raise his shoulder so there is no possible way to call this a dirty hit at all.

Boy, did Stuart lay on a fat one or what? Best hit I've seen all season, but more importantly it was a CLEAN hit...not like some of the crap I've seen in some of the other series. Never thought I would say this, EVER, after the questionable calls in the Wings games this year...but I actually feel for the refs. in some of the other series going on. Breaking-up fights everywhere, and the nastiness going on. Some of that crap is Bulls**t and the refs. in the middle of it trying to keep the peace. Pathetic.
