Bruins Take Game 1 From Hurricanes

Going into tonight's game against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Boston Bruins hadn't played in eight days. There was the distinct possibility that they would come out rusty. On the other hand, the Hurricanes were coming off an emotional win in New Jersey on Tuesday night and might be a bit drained.

As it turned out, both teams came out pretty hard and competed but the Hurricanes seemed to be a step behind tonight. Turnovers and poor play in their own zone led to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Bruins, despite a somewhat evenly played game. Well, as evenly played as a game decided by three goals can be.

One of the big differences in the game was Cam Ward, who outplayed Martin Brodeur through their first round series against the Devils. The Hurricanes actually out shot the Bruins in this game, 27-24, but defensive breakdowns and some rebounds given up by Ward allowed the B's to capitalize on their chances.

More than Ward's play though, turnovers were the big difference in the game. Twice the Hurricanes turned the puck over in the neutral zone, leading to an odd-man rush back the other way. Both times, Marc Savard was on the other end of the play as he netted two goals this way including the eventual game winner in the second period.

One of the more interesting stats from this game is the score and how the Bruins have dominated their opponents on it during the playoffs. Through five games they have outscored their opponents 21-7 and have scored a minimum of four goals in each game and not surrendered more than two.

The Hurricanes will look to rebound in Game 2.
