At the end of Tuesday night's Game 6 between the Red Wings and Ducks, Anaheim's Scott Niedermayer added to Anaheim's history of extreme physicality, elbowing Pavel Datsyuk in the face and, in the process, adding to a large melee. Don't expect Niedermayer to get suspended, though, because this is the NHL, and that would make too much sense. Video of the elbow is above, and video of the fight at large is after the jump.
Not only does he elbow Datsyuk, he looked around first to see if anyone was looking. Talk about "gutless."
But as you said, he, nor Perry or Marchant who received misconducts after the game will have anything happen to them, because the league front office is spineless, and after all it is the Ducks and they can do whatever they want with zero repercussions.
So much for the crackdown on message sending, the only message that has been sent is if you want to goon it up, do it after the game so it won't hurt your team, because the NHL sure as hell won't suspend you for it.
Just watched the video a bunch more times and I don't care how lame the NHL has been with letting suspension worthy crap go, that HAS to be a LONG suspension on Niedermayer. It was a shot to the head, intent to injure, and the game was over. The NHL has to make an example of that, he should get the remainder of the playoffs (which is only gonna be one more game) plus at least 10 games next year. That was just plain disgusting, he could have broken his jaw or given Pav a serious concussion. There is no place for that criminal act in any sport.
that just show how the ducks are even in winning the have to show off the rough stuff the league won't do nothing about because this is the playoffs.but there is game seven and the wings will prevail
Typical Detroit sissies! Go ahead, cry and whine! The rest of America knows the Redwings receive "Special Treatment" by the NHL all the time. Lose a game and cry is so Detroit, the biggest cheapshot team in the NHL!
Yes, because elbowing a player who has been skating circles around you and your comrades for the last 6 games isn't a cheapshot at all. If it had been the other way around and Datsyuk had elbowed Neidermayer, all hell would have broken loose. Datsyuk would have been suspended for the playoffs. The Ducks would have championed Neidermayer as their savior once again.
The favoritism has obviously gone towards Anaheim in this series. And unless you lack the intelligence of a 3 year old, you cannot honestly disagree with that.
I agree. The NHL has been letting the Red Wings get away with cheapshots, headshots, interference, jumping on goalies, etc., and nothing ever happens to them. Great as the skill players are, too many of the Red Wings are thugs and deserve everything they get! And now they have a real hockey team all over them; no more stiffs who are intimidated.
Wow... I'm surprised by this. The elbow didn't even connect. I'm not saying I support or believe that Niedermayer is innocent here, but the fact of the matter is that the elbow didn't connect. Everyone is talking about Niedermayer elbowing Datsyuk in the face, but that didn't happen. The elbow never did connect. If it did, Datsyuk would probably be injured. The headlines should read Niedermayer "attempts" to elbow Datsyuk in the face. Now for that, should Niedermayer get suspended? Maybe, but who knows what the NHL does these days with suspensions. They're so inconsistent. I think it's time the NHL gets together and create some consistency with their suspension rules and then they'll have something to enforce. Because everything is looked at on an incident by incident basis, suspensions or non suspensions will never appear to be right. They just need to make a set or rules and enforce them. But the time for that is in the offseason and not now. Let the guys play - it's the playoffs.
On another note, funny how Datsyuk did get a 5 minute major for fighting there. Does he end up losing his Lady Byng for that now?
hey chief you are so full of !#$$#%%^& you dont know which end it is coming out of ! detroit is a finesse team if anythig the quacks are the thugs and this series is not over yet. GO WINGS
I just watched the video a bumch more times and guess what, the Ducks still win and the Red Wings still get pounded! Do they honestly think they can get away with the face washings, grabbing and glove punches! Come on, these aren't the South Michigan juniors, these are the Anaheim Ducks! The team that took them apart in the '07 playoffs! Red Wings are going fishing! They can cry plenty sitting in the row boat waiting for next year!
You Duck fans are complete morons. The elbow DID connect (nice selective watching), the Ducks attempt and get away with WAY more cheap stuff than Detroit ever even thinks of, and lastly, the Ducks did not take apart Detroit in 07, the got lucky as hell and barely squeaked by them, so you can all go crawl back under that rock you came out of, and make tee times with your favorite Duck player for Saturday, that's where they'll be while the Wings will be at the Joe playing the Hawks. Idiots.
I also like how you all call the Wings a bunch of whiners. Funny, because none of the players or coaches will even discuss the Ducks cheap play and general thuggery, yet your bitch ass coach and players cry after EVERY game about how "dirty" the Wings are and how they get away with so much. Give me a fking break, how can the filthiest team in the NHL who takes dozens of dangerous and cheap shot every game cry about everything the way the Anaheim organization does. Detroit is all class and the Ducks are just asses.
Hey hafttwo and John, It's coming out of the Detroit end! Watch the video again and again. Be honest if you can. There was no George Parros out there kicking Detroit Red Wing Butt; no Chris Pronger either! If you sissies are so upset with Scott Neidermayer, Cory Perry, and the Teemu Salanie's of the Ducks, perhaps you should trade your winged wheels in for "little red riding hoodies!"
chiefdave84...no Ericsson, no Kronwall, no Downey, no McCartey. You're an idiot. Perry, Niedermeyer, Getzlaf, and Marchant would have been the first ones off the ice had any of the above Wings been out there at the end. Remember Ericsson / Perry earlier in the series? Then again, I am sure that the way you saw it, Perry won that one. It starts after the horn with Getzlaf's hook, then rough on Hossa. Perry displays his manhood by jumping Rafalski. And the dirtiest thing I have seen in years was the elbow by Niedermeyer. All three of these "tough" guys doing all of this with helmet and shields and gloves on. Gutless, classless, and without character. I know you are so proud to be a fan. Enjoy your offseason "chief", it starts Friday.
Looks like it's time for the Wings to bring out some old time names from the past just for this one special occasion...Tim "Dr. Hook" McCracken, Andre "Poodle" Loussier, Gilmore Tuttle, Ross "Mad Dog" Madison, Clarence "Screaming Buffalo" Swamptown and even maybe Ogie Ogilthorpe. Let the fun begin. Watch Em' pluck and @!*ck the Ducks. When the Ducks have all bled out and turned the ice red the WINGS will seek their next foe. RIP DUCKS
The NHL said the would punish direct hit to the head that were intentional. What 's more than this one Colin Cambell. Walker walks away with nothing,Oveschkin with nothing,Niedemeyer with nothing. Those incident were deliberate attempt to injured, but no,lets suspend Brashear for a good clean hit when the player wasn't looking, that makes no sense.....
I love Hockey, but it will never be a major sport until they take away the bad calls on the refs part and idiotic fighting. I want to see hockey, not a poor excuse for boxing. It is a wonderful sport to watch when it is being played. Anyone that says it is part of the sport is a moron. They do not allow this type of play in any other major sport, and it should not be tolerated here. If Hockey would clean up its image, then I believe more people would be open to whatching it. Play the game the way it was invented, and leave the fighting to the professionals. And by the way, the Ducks can't play the game, so this is what the have to resort to.
Just disappointed with the Wings lack of intensity and persistence in game 6 that they so aptly displayed in game 4. But I guess there's nothing better than a playoff game 7 in Hockeytown. The question is...will the Wings be the team that played in game 6,or the team that SHOWED-UP in game 4??? Yes agree that a suspension SHOULD be in order for the Ducks unnecessary cheap-shots after a game they had ALREADY won. But I,m under no illusion that the spineless NHL will appropriately issue any. But kinda think all the Ducks did was to awaken a Sleeping Giant by their actions.

Unless Datsyuk was acting or dodging, his head movement seems to indicate that the elbow did in fact make contact with his head.
