While the hockey world is debating whether Niklas Kronwall's hit on Martin Havlat should have been ruled interference or charging (or nothing at all), Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell weighed in with his thoughts on the hit, as well as Kronwall's reputation as a physical presence on the ice (hint: he's not a fan). According to Ansar Khan of Mlive.com, Campbell was one of the most vocal critics of the hit, calling it "gutless all around."
Here's the full quote, via Khan:
"I thought (Kronwall) jumped. I thought Marty didn't have the puck. I thought his forearm came up high. I thought it was gutless all around,'' Campbell said. "He's done it hundreds of times in the league and it seems like nothing ever happens. ... These guys gotta pay for it, guys that are taking shots to the head. It's unacceptable, and it's not like it's the first time it's happened with that guy."Campbell touches on a little bit of everything here, including the comment about it not being the first time Kronwall has been involved in such a crushing, controversial play. A quick search of the key words "Niklas" and "Kronwall" on YouTube turns up a goldmine of video's featuring hits the 28-year-old defenseman has dished out during his four-year NHL career. Here's a quick sample:

Ummm, not that the hit by Kronwall wasn't scary last night..........and I hope that Havlat is ok but is Campbell serious?????????????? I think he's obsessing about a another player to distract from his crappy defensive play the other night that lost his team a game! Another guy who "professed his love for Buffalo" but couldn't wait to leave and play somewhere else! A bit of a hypocrite, perhaps.

I was at the game too and it was a clean hit but I do think that Kronwall was intentionally trying to hurt Havlat. Good solid hard hitting games are the most fun to watch and I am sure if you ask the players they will agree the most fun to play but you don't line a guy up from 15ft away and blast him at full speed and say you weren't trying to hurt him! If the shoe was on the other foot all of Detroit would be screaming just as loud! Play physical but don't try to end a guy's career!

Campbell, if you can't take it, then get off the ice!! Get a mini skirt and some pompoms and become a cheerleader or something. Even your own fans agress the refs blew the call.

Brian is delusional, Kronwall DID NOT JUMP. I posted the pic on the other story here, when contact was made, both skates were on the ice, his elbow was down, and the puck was no more that a few inches from Havlat's skate. It was clean without question.
That said, I hope Campbell DOES run around and try to get revenge. That way he is out of position AGAIN, and the Wings will get ANOTHER breakway/3 on 1 goal thanks to that sorry excuse for a defenceman.

I agree with you about Campbell 100%, he's been pulling one bone head move after another for most of the season! He spends more time deep in the offensive zone than most of the forwards and if it wasn't for Khabby in net his plus minus rating would be even worse, if that's possible for a 6 million dollar man. The saddest part is that the Hawks are stuck with him for 4 more years!

No doubt about it. It was a charge / interference. Havlet never touched the puck. Kronwall clearly took a run and threw a shot to the head. Intent to injure. That's the type of dirty player he is. The players all know it . The refs also know it.
Unlike other antagonist past and present guys like Claude Lemiuxe , Mathew Barnaby etc, Guys who could really stir the pot and get the crowd going. Kronwall is just a plain brown wrapper cheap shot artist . Not colorful. not exciting just a cheap shot artist. He takes runs , throws head shots. Dirty not tough.
For the game . The Hawks had 4 powerplays the Red wings had 3 the total difference in powerplay time was about 3 minutes. The Wings had all the power plays in the second period. There were none after that.
This has been a very evenly officiated series . Both team have had 10 powerplays both teams have had 2 powerplay goals.

Like in most cases when there's a "controversial " call the refs get it right and the majority of the fans get it wrong. Even supposedly educated fans don't always understand the rules.
No body understands this better then the media. They play it up. That's how they sell a papers.

wsr, you are an idiot, you are the one that doesn't understand the rules. If it was ACTUALLY a penalty, the ref's would have made the call immediately (no arm EVER went up) not after it was clear there was an injury. It's simple the refs made up the call because a Hawks player got injured at home, if that same hit is made, and Havlat (who gets hurt getting out of bed btw) skated away, there is no call.
Anyone who has any knowledge of hockey and is not a complete Hawks homer knows it's a clean hit, so stuff it, moron.

Oh yeah, and where were these calls in tonights Pitt/Carolina game when a Cane got his head slammed into the boards, or when Malkin made a similar hit, but lead with a flying elbow, or when Pitt's Staal took an elbow to the nose? But yeah, Kronwall, who didn't elbow or leave his feet is such a "dirty player." Please.

Kronwall has mastered the art of checking! For Detroit fans it reminds us of the old days of Konstantinov. Keep up the good work Nicklaus.

by the way refs have been calling the playoffs intelligent fans can see who hockey headquarters in toronto wants to win. in the conference finals the cheating refs are calling more penalities against carolina and detroit. those in toronto will probably give the bad refs raises after the stanley cup series is over. what a disgrace.

The correct call was made.
1. You can't hit a player that hasn't touched the puck. Havlat never touched the puck. The last player in possession was a Red wing , (interference) on Kronwall.
That might have been a knit picking call. Had it been a clean hit the refs probably would have let it go or called just a minor but.............
2. Kronwall also took run at Havlat (Charging) Cheap shot
3. Kronwall also threw an in intentional shot to the head causing injury ( Misconduct ) A very dirty shot.
This is the kind of player Kronwall is .
Kronwall could have thrown a solid clean hit to the chest but his intent was to injure. He intentionally went for the head . No two ways about it.
There are plenty of ways to put a guys lights out by throwing good solid clean checks. See Scott Stevens. Taking runs and throwing head shots is not playing a hard hitting style. It's Dirty there should be no place for that kind of cheap play.

Streps,
You ain't got a clue what you're talking about. The puck hit Havlat's skate, establishing posession. The hit was shoulder to body - Havlat's head made contact with the boards or the ice after the hit. Kronwall's elbow was down and there was no intent to injure. And, I don't know where you're getting your info, but Kronwall does not have a rep in the league for dirty play. Now QUIT YOUR CRYING, ya baby. And quit watching hockey - clearly you don't have the stomach for it!

Brown's hit on Hudler in the Ducks series was legal, according to the NHL, but Kronwall's hit on Havlat was illegal, according to the NHL.
Totally backwards.
