Report: Avs Offer Patrick Roy Control

Last week it was reported that Hall of Fame goaltender and former Avalanche netminder Patrick Roy was offered the team's head coaching position currently occupied by Tony Granato. Today, a report from Ruefronteac.com cites sources close to Roy that the Avs have stepped up their offer to include their GM position.

The report goes on to mention that the Avalanche have stepped up the offer to try and draw Roy away from other suitors, particularly the Montreal Canadiens, whose head coaching job is currently vacant. The Habs fired Guy Carbonneau earlier this year and GM Bob Gainey filled in for the remainder of the season.

Handing total control of a team -- let alone any control -- over to someone who has no managerial experience at the NHL level would usually be a very controversial matter. However, given Roy's storied NHL career and success as owner, GM and coach of the Quebec Remparts in the the QMJHL likely preclude that. And, to be honest, the way things are going in Denver right now, it's likely their best option.

This is a risky move, but Roy's successful career shows potential and, more importantly, this would be a huge PR move for the Avs. Attendance at the Pepsi Center has fallen considerably the past two seasons and bringing back an icon like Roy would certainly spur positive momentum with the fanbase. And, if this turns out to be anything like his tenure in Quebec, it should provide for some great YouTube moments.
