Earlier this season we took a look at the power play/penalty kill differential for every team in the league to gain a better understanding of which team may (or may not) benefit from penalty calls during games. Some of you asked to see a similar analysis for the postseason, and because we aim to please, your wish is our command. The second round report can be found by clicking here.On Thursday, the NHL announced that the officials for the Stanley Cup Finals will be Paul Devorski, Marc Joannette, Dennis Larue and Bill McCreary, while the linesmen will include Derek Amell, Steve Miller, Jean Morin and Pete Racicot. Based on the conference finals assignments, that means Dave Jackson, Dan O'Halloran, Kevin Pollock and Eric Furlatt were dropped from the rotation. Here's how the officials did in the conference finals in terms of number of penalties called (once again, excluding fighting majors):
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
-- The Dave Jackson and Dan O'Halloran duo were the officials in the now infamous Niklas Kronwall game, which saw the Red Wings defender get booked for a five-minute major and a game misconduct for "interference" as a result of his crushing hit on Martin Havlat. It was the second game this season that featured such a penalty when Jackson was one of the referees. Neither official is advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals.
-- The most controversial game in the Eastern Conference final was Game 1, as it featured the Matt Cooke-Erik Cole incident, as well as Chad LaRose having his potential game-tying goal waived off due to an interference penalty on Cole in front of the net. The officials? Jackson and O'Halloran (not advancing). Not the best round for those two, as they were at the center of the most controversial and discussed calls.
-- Who was responsible for making the worst call in the history of sports in Game 4 of the Western Conference final? That would be Marc Joannette (moving on) and Kevin Pollock (not moving on), while that also happened to be the most penalized game in the conference finals, due in large part to the second and third period meltdown of the Blackhawks (I'm looking at you, Ben Eager).
Here's a brief look at each of the Stanley Cup final referees, and the number of penalties called in games they've been involved in this postseason:
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
As far as pairings are concerned, the second round featured Devorski and Larue together for four games, averaging 8.5 penalties per game, while Devorski and Joannette worked game 7 of the Anaheim vs. Detroit series dishing out 10 penalties.
As for the power play/penalty kill breakdown ...
Teams in bold are teams that played in the conference finals.
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
-- The two best teams in the playoffs -- and the two teams remaining -- are Nos. 1 and 2 in terms of power play differential. Conspiracy theorists will say it's because of a Gary Bettman-led agenda to get Pittsburgh and Detroit into the finals. Rational people will say it's because these are the two best puck possession teams out there right now, and puck possession, naturally, helps lead to more penalties and power plays.
-- Both teams are averaging, roughly, 3.5 penalties against per game, while the Penguins have a slight edge in the power play per game department, edging out Detroit 4.9 to 4.6.
-- Just in case you're interested, a year ago the Red Wings had 30 power plays to the Penguins' 27 in the six game series, while the officials were Paul Devorski, Marc Joannette, Dan O'Halloran and Brad Watson. Two of the four are back for this year's series.

red wing coach's need to keep an eye on devorski, he wouldn't be able to make a correct call if he could use binoculars. he is the one that would get the biggest bonus from hockey headquarters in toronto cause its no secret they want the pens to win the cup. what other reason would they move the series up 5 days. they know the wing players are not healthy. but the wings won't whine about it, they know what to expect.

i think you are totally delusional if you think that they moved game 1 up from starting june 5...pretty sure it was because of the massive amount of people that were pissed about waiting so long for the series to start...cause really why would you want to wait for a week to 10 days for the finals...get over it...the Pens are gonna win the Cup this year...and of course as per usual there will be some conspiracy reason as to why they did...the Penguins are an amazing team right now...open your eyes and realize that already!!!!

local affiliate wkyc (cleveland)/nbc did a piss poor job of televising both sunday playoff games, pre empting them for early season tribe games ...the network program managers are clueless ...the baby blue penguins will be lucky to take two from the wings this year, they are a one trick pony

I think that all the fans and players of both teams ask, is that the games be called FAIRLY!!!! The fans have invested their time and money, and the players have played the whole season to get to the Big Dance. They deserve NO LESS then to have these games be fairly officiated, and not to be decided by a bad or controversial call. And what is a penalty for one team, SHOULD be a penalty for the other too, oh lol!!! AND MAY THE BEST TEAM WIN.

Think I know who Gary BUTTman wants to win now....at least 4 penalties by Pittsburgh WERE NOT CALLED. The 2 most obvious were the trip on Kronwall which lead to Malkins breakaway, and the OBVIOUS elbow to the head of Holmstrom, after a stoppage of play in front of Fleury. SO MUCH FOR THE FAIR OFFICIATING.....but the Wings STILL WON. 1 down...3 to go. Hope the Wings shove it down BUTTman's throat, oh lol!!! and his ROBBING AND RIPPING REFS. too, you know. GO WINGS IN GAME 2!!!!!

I love this article. Regardless of how good a puck possession team you are though, the Canes got robbed by the officials numerous times. Pens series aside, they were the least penalized team in the league in the regular season only to be absolutely crushed by the officials in the postseason against NJ, Boston and Pittsburgh.
And until the 3rd Round when the Canes were dead tired they were considered by many to be a very good puck possession team as well and it didn't help them in Rounds 1 and 2 either. In round 3 they had two blatant non calls on knee to knees that took out Cole, and Rutuu, a game tying goal in Game 1 taken off the books and a few dives by Crosby go uncalled.
Pittsburgh probably still would've won the series due to superior talent, but you never really know...

To William O'Donnell....enjoyed reading your comment...much true in it, and that was my opinion too as far as the Canes. I really think they were just "dead tired" by the time they got to Round 3...and if they hadn't been, who knows who would have won.
