When the calendar flips to June, and the Stanley Cup Finals start, it seems to be a tradition for NHL officials' whistles to suddenly malfunction. So far in this year's series, we've seen plenty of evidence that the officials are determined to "let the players play." This has been endorsed by members of both teams, but may have helped lead to a rather embarrassing display during Game 3 Tuesday night.
More Coverage: Pens Improving on Face-Offs
During the latter stages of the first period, the Penguins -- trailing 2-1 at the time -- were able to sustain some puck possession in the Detroit zone. As the Penguins cycled the puck, Versus analyst Ed Olczyk noticed that they had six players on the ice.
He noted that they had for some time prior to his mentioning it, and it was another ten seconds or so before defenseman Mark Eaton slithered to the Pittsburgh bench.
Olczyk estimated that the Penguins had six players on the ice for "at least 20-25 seconds." After the game, forward Maxime Talbot joked that "with six guys we cycled the puck a little bit."
All kidding aside, and all talk of letting the players play aside, it's hard to laugh about such officiating ineptitude. Referees Paul Devorski and Dennis LaRue were joined by linesmen Derek Arnell and Pierre Racicot for Tuesday's game. All four are working Finals games based on merit. This isn't a random draw of officials to work games on the league's biggest stage, no matter how it might seem to be.
Instead, these are said to be the league's best. In this case, the best the NHL has to offer put on a shocking display of obliviousness. The four men in striped shirts didn't notice the six players on the ice. Not at all. Since Pittsburgh had possession of the puck, a whistle would have been instantaneous.
The Red Wings didn't cry about it after the game, to their credit. They may have felt a bit responsible for not noticing themselves until Eaton was on his way to the bench. It's not their job, however, to notice rules infractions on the ice.
Of course, they may have remembered their own extra-player gaffe. It happened late in a regular-season game against Nashville, and just like Tuesday night, four officials somehow missed the obvious.
There's no turning back for the league. They can't retroactively give Detroit a man advantage. They can't apologize and just make it go away. Instead, it's up to the selected officials to avoid such embarrassment in the remainder of the series, whether that ends up being two, three, or four games.

great article..totally true, from a pens fan 21 seconds is a long time not to notice, i don't think it's the ref's pulling for anyone as it states the wing got away with it before also so it happens however such an infraction shouldn't happen during the stanley cup. both the home teams have gotten some no-calls but that's because the ref's are letting them play hockey which is great but that should have been called and that's all there is to it. the wings are the best hockey team of the past decade hands down and the pens got alot of work ahead of them, fleury stay square with the puck in front of you please!!! please quit floppin around like a friggin' fish everytime a puck comes at you

I think the extra man on the ice should of been called, if it were det who had an extra man advantage i know pitts would of cried about it-i know they are saying let them play hockey but if you are going to make calls for one team it should be for both teams-if these four refs are the best the league has to offer then that is pretty sad for the league because they all seem to be blind!!! the wings are the best team in the league they will be ok even with bad calls, they didnt even complain about the bad call after the game that shows that our boys have class-they will be back on thursday watch out pittsburg

If all you can talk about is how the refs let the Pens get away with something, you can not be a hockey fan. This has been one of the best play-off series in a long time, even with the cheating that Detroit gets away with. Watch Holmgren, interfer with Fluery everytime he is on the ice. Watch the little moving picks the other centermen and forwards use in keeping a Pens defenseman away from whoever has the puck.
It is still great to watch these guys move and pass and hit. Let them play and please will someone talk to the director and let him know that there is always some action after the whistle is blown. We do not want to look at the coach or the bench or the goalie skating out of the crease. We want to see the pushing and shoving that is going on.
Get a director who is actually a Hockey fan, not someone who is trying to make this a work of art. That is up to the guys skating.

they have missed very flagrant fouls on pitt the whole series!Game 1 a player left his feet on a check! game 3 they missed a horrible non call on a cheap head shot with the stick, it seems the wings will have to play both pitt and the officials in their quest for another cup! Shame on the nhl for this crap and they wonder why they cant stay on national tv?

Like the blatant boarding against Hossa late in the Third. The NHL is a joke. What's worse, the NHL or our Government? The answer...it's a tie!

Collin Campbell and Gary Bettman, you are both pathetic. The Stanley Cup Finals and this is the best you have to offer? Bettman acted like a "Kansas City Faggot" on a CBC interview last night, actually taking accolades for the fine officiating that has taken place during the Finals. What a JOKE!

NHL officials have long been known to be idiots-remember David Newell. He personally won several Stanley Cups for Montreal. The NHL has always been tainted by poor officiating-but if you speak out about the officials, they will fine and or suspend you.How unamerican that is.21 seconds is a long time-fire those officials for incompetence. If you do not you risk the NHL staying as a fourth rate professional league-and rightly so.

The NHL talks a good game but they are no better than any othere major league! The officials favor the home team and they make up rules as they go along like the Penguin player who should have received the game suspension which was overruled. Both teams are equally getting screwed by mismanagement at the top of the league!

The Red Wings rock whether the Penguins have six players on the ice or five. Keep up the good work guys! We're waiting for you to come home again with that Stanley Cup...how many cups have we won...oh that's right 11 and how many have they won, oh that's right 2. So I'm thinking the whining is on the Penguins side. GO RED WINGS!

It led directly to the Pens 2nd goal. Pretty horrific no call. 100 times worse than the "penalty shots" the Penguins fans wanted in the first two games.
Both teams have been getting away with illegal hits, holding, interference, and that's fine since it has been consistent. But missing this call is inexcusable. Fire all 4 officials.

I think that we should also take note that in many other hockey games there are calls that are missed...not just this one. I'm no expert, but I think that Detroit should be knocked down a peg or two because of their dirty hits and rough play. Make no mistake, they are good and deserve to be in the finals. Despite the missed call, the game ended in a 4-2 win for the Penguins. I am a Penguin fan and I am glad that it won't end up in a 4-0 Series Win for Detroit. The Penguins have improved since last year, but only time will tell as to which team will win. I have my ideas, but you never know...

i can't believe that you would try to point out detroit's bad hits and playing ruff-there have been so many illegal hits by the pens that it is unbelieveable-even before this series the refs were not calling anything for the wings only against them-the chicago series was the worst i have never seen so many players playing so dirty. the wings are the best!!! the nhl is trying to build crosby up as the next up and coming star in the nhl that is why the calls are not being called against the pens because they want to make it look like they may actually be as good as the wings-when you try to build a team around 1 or 2 good players it makes a losing team, the wings have awesome players and are going to bring stanley home again!!!!
