FanHouse's Adam Gretz takes a look at his top 50 players in the NHL. No. 41 is Anaheim Ducks defenseman Scott Niedermayer. The Anaheim defense has experienced some significant changes in the past year. Gone are Chris Pronger and Francois Beauchemin; In are Ryan Whitney, Luca Sbisa and Nick Boynton. In terms of toughness and physicality, it's a night-and-day transformation, but an upgrade in terms of youth and long-term potential (while also stocking the cupboard with draft picks).
One player that's returning, at least for the short-term, is 17-year veteran Scott Niedermayer. The 35-year-old is coming back for at least one more season after signing a one-year deal worth over $6 million earlier this offseason. He talked about his decision to return to the Ducks with our Susan Slusser in early July.
The NHL's Top 50 Players: See the Entire List

Draft Year: 1991
The third overall pick in 1991 -- after Eric Lindros and Pat Falloon -- Niedermayer is one of just seven players from that first round still active in the NHL. He's played more games (1,183) than any player taken that year.
Why He's On My List
A world-class skater, and a workhorse when it comes to ice time (he averages nearly 27 minutes per game, even at the age of 35), Niedermayer has been one of the best defensemen in the league since he made his debut in 1992. He's won four Stanley Cups, a Norris Trophy and the 2006-07 Conn Smythe Award. His age hasn't slowed him down, as his three best seasons -- statistically -- have all come within the past four years, including this past seasons 59-point performance when the Ducks advanced to the Western Conference Semifinal.
Obligatory YouTube Video
A fine example of Niedermayer's puck-rushing abilities as he takes it coast-to-coast in Game 2 of the 1995 Stanley Cup Final against the Detroit Red Wings.

41? you got to be kidding. This guy is one of the all-time greats, and still is. There is a reason he is the only player to have won every important team championship. He is not only the glue that keeps a difense together, he keeps a team together; has on both coasts and for his country! And while others are slowing down, this guy hasn't lost a step. I say move the guy up about 20 places.

I'll be honest, when I looked at the final list I put together this is one of the ones I second-guessed myself on. Still, there's 750 players in the league, and over 1,000 that play at least a game in a given season, if you're anywhere in somebody's top-50, you're pretty damn good.

Adam,
Thanks for being honest. As good as I thought this guy was, it wasn't until I got to watch him on a regular basis that I saw just how great a player he is. He is easily one of the top 3-4 defensemen in the NHL. As much as I respect Pronger, after watching them both carefully for 80-100 games a year the last couple of years, I would have to say Neidermayer has more upside and is a more valuable player.

Oh,so Niedermayer is "pretty damn good" because he's in "your" top 50?
You think highly of yourself.
Top 20 easy.

The list is simply one guy's opinion, and I've made that perfectly clear from the start. I don't expect everybody to agree and welcome disagreement and debate. Like I said to the first person that commented, I've already second-guessed myself here, though, I don't think I'm disrespecting Niedermayer by having him at this point. There's only six defensemen I have ahead of him (again, simply my opinion, nothing more, nothing less), and four of them were finalists for the Norris Trophy the past two seasons.

Mentioning Pronger and Niedermayer in the same sentance? What are we rating here? The dirtiest players in the NHL?

Maybe Lidstrom, Charra is a recent addition to the elite defense ranks, but no way for Green or Phaneuf. You are kidding about Timmonen, right? Pronger has lost a step and is a ref magnet, which hurts the team!
