FanHouse's Adam Gretz takes a look at his top 50 players in the NHL. No. 39 is Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen.
Including a player in the top-40 that has never tallied 60 points in a single season is likely to cause some confusion -- and angry fist shaking -- among fans outside the Motor City. But over the past two seasons there haven't been many goal-scorers better than the man known as "The Mule."
The NHL's Top 50 Players: See the Entire List
One of the many great finds by Hakan Anderson in the Detroit scouting department, Franzen was plucked out of Linkoping HC of the Swedish Elite League as a 24-year-old during the 2004 draft. Like many Red Wings prospects, he was eased into the lineup during his first two years in the league, and since the start of the 2007-08 season, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound forward has scored 86 goals in 182 games (including playoffs).
If there's one knock against him it's that he tends to get injured quite a bit, but when you're standing in front of the net taking abuse every night, and doing dirty work along the boards, the injuries are going to mount. When he's on the ice, he's established himself as a goal-scoring, mouthguard stealing machine around the net.

Draft Year: 2004
Taken in the third round, 97th overall, only two players selected in his class have more goals at this time: Washington's Alex Ovechkin and Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin.
Why He's On My List
One of the best power forwards in the league, and nearly impossible to move off the puck down low and along the boards, Franzen also a knack for scoring seemingly impossible goals. Over the past two seasons he's been one of the best goal-scorers in the playoffs, and has been a key cog in Detroit's back-to-back trips to the Stanley Cup Final, and I'll admit, this had a big influence in my decision to put him in this spot. No Detroit Red Wings player has scored more goals in a single playoff run than Franzen's 13 (in just 16 games!) in 2007-08, which has to be worth something given that franchise's history. He's the type of player you want, and need, on your team if you're playing for the Stanley Cup.
Obligatory YouTube Video
One of the best goals of the season, Franzen pounces on a turnover in the neutral zone and embarrasses Montreal's Ryan O'Byrne.

Glad to see he made it this high up. Figured he wouldn't because he doesn't seem to care much about the regular season.
I'm glad the Wings signed him to that contract and effectively made him a life-long Wing. A core of Datsyuk, Franzen, and Zetterberg for the next decade is nothing to laugh at.
I remember reading an article in the Detroit Free Press about his contract signing a few months ago and the writer stated that he felt Franzen could be as prolific a score as Ovechkin and Malkin if someone could convince him that the regular season meant as much as the playoffs. I suppose it doesn't matter what he does in the regular season though. He comes through when it matters - grabbing huge goals in tough playoff games.

id rather have a guy that trys to win every time he steps on the ice. You can just flip a switch and have good things happen forever...wouldn't be surprised if he fades away within two years. enjoy that contract det.

He did put up 34 goals and 25 assists last season whilst playing with 3 of the better scorers in the league in Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Hossa. This year, without Hossa, I think he'll be in the 40's. Certainly not up to par with what Ovechkin or Malkin will get every year for the next decade-decade and a half but certainly nothing to be worried about. He has improved mightily each year so far.

you know i don't get to see him play a whole lot, but a knock on him from the times that I have is that he could be a lot tougher. but he does have a pretty gifted scoring touch, especially deflections

He sits in front of the net and gets beaten to death. He's the reason Holmstrom has become expendable now. If getting hit by Pronger for 20 minutes a night isn't tough, I don't know what is.

picking on little patrick kane? come on now... Jumbo banged Frannys head off the glass a few times with a nice face wash at the end of the 2nd (not sure if you recall the game i'm talking about) and Johan packed it up and called it a game. I think they said it was a lower body issue. who knew that's where egos were located!? When it comes to battling actual men he folds. no offence to kane, he's just a kid.

Why did you accuse me of picking on Patrick Kane? I haven't mentioned Kane at all. All I said was that Franzen stands in front of the net and takes one hell of a beating every night from the opposing teams' biggest defenceman. When it came to the 7 game series against Anaheim, he was getting hit, pushed, slashed, checked, cross checked, etc. by Chris Pronger every time he was in the Anaheim zone.
