If the sport of professional ice hockey "has the best people," as People In Hockey like to tell each other all the time, then how come it's often a living hell to be a hockey fan?Monday's kick in the rear came from the good people at the National Hockey League Players Association. Paul Kelly, the union's executive director for less than two years, was fired. Kelly's persona was of a peacemaker and dealmaker, of -- oh no! -- a gentleman.
Kelly had no future as a union leader, even in hockey. You know the entire enterprise is ugly when an articulate, passionate, 47-year-old hockey player is left to reading a union-manicured statement instead of letting loose, Chris Chelios-style. The NHLPA is indeed made up of many of the best people in professional sports. Collectively, they need to get their sticks together.
Now the moderate Kelly, who spoke openly of a potential work stoppage in 2011 as death to the NHL, is gone. Now hockey fans begin bracing for the next time "our game" shoots itself in the foot and everywhere else, for the next time the NHL stabs its fans in the heart.
The clock starts ticking on a lockout in September 2011, when the Collective Bargaining Agreement expires. Bank on sweating it out. A source closely connected to the NHLPA told FanHouse late Monday night, "It's impossible to picture the new boss making peace with the owners soon after Kelly was kicked out for being too cozy with them."
Now hockey fans begin bracing for the next time "our game" shoots itself in the foot and everywhere else, for the next time the NHL stabs its fans in the heart.Names like the Che-like Eric Lindros (good player, lots of hits to the head), NHLPA lawyer Ian Penny (the interim director somehow got a contract extension in the midst of chaos ... niiiice) and ombudsman Buzz Hargrove (check out his fine work in the auto industry!) have surfaced as the leaders of this mutiny and as possible replacements.
Please, a show of hands -- anyone care?
Of course not. It's just another day in the life of a hockey fan.
In Phoenix, the biggest Coyotes fans and the Greatest Player in the History of the Game have no clue about the future of their team. In South Florida, "acting" GM Randy Sexton does the best he can while ownership uncertainty and a GM-in-waiting (bet on Neil Smith) hover around the franchise. In more than one NHL city, Uncle Gary Bettman hosts frequent mediation sessions between feuding owners. Tuesday, fans learned network partner VERSUS is not on DirecTV.
In New York, it's not enough for Oct. 3 to herald the season opener between the Islanders and defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins, not enough for the date to mark the NHL debut of John Tavares. That day is also the deadline for Islanders owner Charles Wang to have "certainty" from Town of Hempstead politicians on his Lighthouse Project, the massive transformation of the Nassau Coliseum and surrounding property.
In "this economy," as league executives like to say when it's convenient, here's an idea: maybe it's time all the "good people" in hockey woke up and started thinking about the best people in hockey.

Excellent post, CB! Makes you wish there was someone over in the NHL offices who actually listened to us little fans.

This wasn't a split vote, something big must have gone down in order for all 30 members to oust Kelly.. time will tell. Like always, great read CB!

The NHL cannot make it through another work stoppage.
P.S. When it comes to the Lighthouse project "just build it"

CB, It's obvious that Kelly was too close to Bettman for the comfort of the PA. The not-so-obvious question is what will kill this incarnation of fun-and-gun hockey: no TV deal with ESPN or a work stoppage? In other words, if hockey falls through the ice again, will anyone be there to hear its cries for help?
BTW, you are a new (and welcome) edition to my Google Reader. I'll miss you at Islanders Point Blank, but I'm looking forward on hearing what you have to say about the league at-large (though throwing a bone by talking Isles is always welcome).

A lockout would be insane. Fighting over the pie while it spoils. Wake up!

Kelly was just the same exact copy of the man he replaced, Ted Saskin. What the NHLPA needs is a former player who understands what the average NHL'er and the NHL superstars need--and that isn't to kow-tow to that squirming squirrel head named Gary Bettman. If anything, in order for the strike to be prevented, Bettman MUST step down. Let the owners learn from their mistakes in letting Bettman run the NHL and use it to pick one that can be ONLY better. Take a look at Roger Goodell for the NFL, he has done things with a backbone and stuck by his guns. Why can't we go with a man that can be and do great things for the NHL and not expand into markets that were NEVER viable to begin with!!!!!

Ugh, I wouldn't be able to stomach another work stopage! Neither the league or the PA can be foolish enough to let it happen again, right? Right?! Jeez...

Mutuny is right.
This league has been making backwards choices since Uncle Gary stepped in. Hopefully there is a happy ending and we get another couple of years of hockey before the next CBA fiasco...

I was very dishearten to find out that the PA was not happy with Paul Kelly. What is wrong with someone that keeps the players on the ice? I hope that the NHLPA looks at what happened to Arena Football when they "took a year off".

why did we all choose hockey as our sport? As an Islander fan and an NHL fan it is just brutal. Hopefully the NHLPA and owners can reach an agreement, I am not holding my breath though.

CB - As long as most teams struggle to earn a profit without the side car revenue streams (as new buildings provide) ... there will be issues with what players feel they deserve to earn and what owners feel players deserve to earn. In an industry that involves multiple market places there is a unique level of value and earnings power available to each club. Most competitive businesses compete locally for their share of the pie.
How can a team in Columbus compete on the same scale as Philly, NY or Toronto. Answer? They can't? So they'll always be just Columbus until they WIN. That goes for all the small to medium and non-traditional market teams like Phoenix, Nashville and even our well established beloved Islanders.
With the KHL around this time around the players possess tons more leverage ... and a work stoppage is sure to reduce the NHL to a 20 - 25 club team... Thinning of the herd ... some players then may actually regret striking. The NHL community as a whole can't survive another stoppage.
No Vs. on DirecTv is an ominous sign.

The brains who run hockey have a true death wish. I sometimes really have to wonder what Gary Bettman's end game is. It seems to me the goal is to crush the players. Maybe he can find another big cable outfit when the Vs. deal ends. There's always BET or some Spanish network. How 'bout QVC? He can always sell Kansas City Islander jerseys there.

Nooooooo! I have DirectV and had no idea that Versus is no longer available. I put on the old VS channel (603) and it says "Comcast, which owns Versus, has forced us to take down the channel because we will not submit to their unfair and outrageous demands." Hilarious and depressing.
I guess I can't blame the NHL for what Comcast is doing, but Bettman needs to crack some skulls over at Comcast.
