The last time Donald Brashear was involved in a Rangers vs. Capitals game, he was suiting up for Washington and facing the wrath of fans in New York for knocking out Blair Betts in a playoff game.
On Thursday night, Brashear was on the other side of the matchup and trying to win some fans in Madison Square Garden (after he was booed during his formal introduction a couple of weeks ago) by throwing down with 6-foot-4, 225-pound Capitals forward Brandon Sugden ... twice.
Video after the jump.
Midway through the second period the two squared off for the first time in a bout that lasted only a few seconds -- while being accompanied by a chorus of boos from the crowd -- and ended when Brashear lost his balance, allowing Sugden to get a couple of quick shots in.
The second round, however, was a marathon bout early in the third period that started off slow before gaining some momentum at the end.
As for the game itself, the Rangers pulled it out, 3-2, thanks a Christopher Higgins goal with 1:10 to play in regulation.

Am I hearing a little sarcasm ... I hope. As a REAL hockey fan (and the daughter of a pro hockey player) I hope the refs have decided to let the big guys sort it out on the ice. Hockey has no out-of-bounds. The job of the enforcers is to protect the stars. Dominance has to be established or serious injuries can happen to key players. Fighting has long been a part of the game. The refs have been on a "sissy" campaign for a few years now and it's ruining hockey. Bring back fighting and get rid of the neutral zone trap (and its attendant dump-and-chase game which is horrible to watch.) So all of you who are offended by the way the game is played correctly, watch golf.

Yes I agree, why are those Refs letting them fight?? This is a good example of how jocks never mature into real men, they take their immaturity into their adulthood. I was shocked when I watched those Refs just let them fight. This is a terrible example to our children.

Fighting has been a part of hockey for as long as anyone can remember. I am a hockey player of 15 years, and a youth hockey coach. I don't condone fighting in the younger leagues or NCAA strictly because the athletes could injure themselves out of a possible career. But in the NHL fighting isn't only for the players, its for the fans. I've always said, more people stick around for the fights than leave because of them. You can't change a sport, it has to evolve. And fighting isn't going anywhere anytime soon! GO BLUES!

Let's see, the average NHL linesman or ref weighs about 165, and Sugden & Brashear each weigh about 230. Would you get between them? Fighting has been part of the game since it's inception. If you don't like that part of the game, figure skating is on another channel.

fighting is part of hockey and always will be.
go protest a dodgeball game if you can't stand the violence.
terry o'reily and dave schultz rivalry was classic.
refs break the fights up when the situation gets too onesided or dangerous.

Even though Brashear is a goon, I'd rather see fighting in hockey than cheap shots. Two guys square off, no gloves, like real men. Remember, every guy in hockey has a stick, potenially a lethal weapon. These 2 are goons, enforcers, let them go at it.

Dave Schultz was the man. He put the Bully in the Broad Street Bullies. O'Reily spent alot of the time getting up off the ice.
Go Flyers!

Keith Magneson would fight the big dude though.
Even though Magneson was out wieghed by about 40 pounds he would fight Schultz or anybody else.
He was a fighter first, skater second. Most of those old fights were fair and nobody was blindsided and hurt real bad.
