Just as the puck was crossing the goal line, Philadelphia's Jeff Carter was lining him up.
The result was not pretty.
After being down on the ice for several minutes, Salmela was taken off on a stretcher and was shown moving his arms and legs. There was no penalty called on the play.
These are the types of plays that always result in brutal arguments from hockey fans as to what is a clean hit, and what is not a clean hit. Carter finishes his check, which he has to do in that situation, but it appears to be one of those always controversial hits to the head -- and Salmela never saw it coming. As we all know by now, there is no rule against head shots in the NHL. The other thing to consider is that some of the damage likely came from the fact he fell face-first on the ice, as TSN's Bob McKenzie pointed out.
Regardless of when the damage was done, Colin Campbell is still likely to give it a look Tuesday morning.
What happens then, as always, is anybody's guess.
Despite falling down in the 2-0 hole, Philadelphia rallied to win the game 3-2.
I guess you don't remember Scott Stevens who made a career of dishing out concussions to anyone with their head down. He targetted Lindros right after he returned from a concussion. Flyers have also had their share of getting hits like this. Primeau had to retire, Lindros, Roenick, Gagne, all bad concussions. League has to do something about this.

I would argue that this is bad karma coming back on the Devils. The Flyers have probably lost more key players to concussions than anyone in recent history. Remember what the NHL did about that? Nothing.
Payback is a bitch!

The Flyers are the cheap-shot champions. I'd be embarrassed to root for them, but Philly fans just aren't that smart. They're all Bertuzzi wannabees....they play to cripple. It's against the spirit of the game. Can you imagine trying to coach these jerks? It is a team of jerks without much skill. I pay to see skill, not stupid goons.

Watch it in slow motion. It was clean shoulder to shoulder hit! Watched the game yesterday. I'm neither a Philly or Devils fan, but ya gotta love Brodeur! Great CLEAN hit! Go Wings!!!

Jeff Carter needs to be ejected from the league. There is no place for #$%^&&! like that guy. I'm not a hockey fan becuase of guys like him. Why is the league not doing something about this??!!
You want a guy thrown out of a league that you don't watch? Thanks for checking in.
therodeobarbie 2-09-2010 6:04AM
Hey CC69.....do you even know who Jeff Carter is? Do you understand that he was just finishing his check like every other player? Jeff Carter is NOT known for his hitting at all, he's certainly not a dirty player. You probably don't watch hockey because you really don't have a decent understanding of the game and it's rules. The injuries were caused more by the way he hit the ice than the by the way Carter him. No penalty was given, the Devils coach wasn't upset about the hit or the lack of a penalty and no Devil was out to "avenge" the hit....all that equals a CLEAN HIT.

Eye neither had salmonella nor nor Jeff do that to each other, eye was concentrating on the Space Shuttle launch,by the way, which was a sexcess and a blast off of GOODNESS to the extreme
I had already been a hockey fan for years when Scott Stevens waylaid Eric Lindros with that famous hit a few years ago. At the time, I was shocked to learn that hits to the head were legal. I think the rules need to be re-visited, as no league should allow direct head hits. Hocky is violent enough without the headhunting crap.
More penalties in hockey? No thank you. That kid was stupid to go all the way around the defender and then cut up into the crease. There is obviously going to be a center coming back at full speed. That kid is lucky nothing worse happened to him.

anyone who thinks this is bad. go to youtube and put in Scott Stevens...try hit on Paul Kariya for starters and work your way down, hit on Eric Lindos 2nd...Im glad to finally see a Devil get knocked out. It was probably a dirty hit but screw it, its closer then you idiots are making it sound...he had possession of the puck, the hit was just high. And anyone who thinks Jeff Carter is a dirty player is a moron.
The only idiot or moron I see on this board is you, resulting to name calling when all you needed to do was explain your stand on whether or not the hit was dirty and call it a day.

don't forget Slava Kozlov during the stanely cup (wings vs devils) Stevens knocked him out. Kozlov had his head down going up center ice, that is true but that doesnt mean you have to try and kill a guy. I LOVE hard hitting hockey games but I do not like the head hunting crap that Pronger and that no talent Ovechkin :P and high hitting players like to do.

Ugh. I'm tired of the Flyers doing crap like this. They're such dirty players. I hope one of these days karma comes back and bites them in the a$$.
