According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the league is expected to announce that the next NHL Winter Classic will be awarded to Chicago, where the Blackhawks will host the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field.

The choice has to be seen as something of a darkhorse, as the early word on the 2009 game had it being played in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium between the Rangers and the Bruins or at Beaver Stadium in Pennsylvania between the Flyers and the Penguins. Word that all was not well with the plans to bring the game to Yankee Stadium surfaced just recently, after NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman mentioned that there were a number of issues regarding construction at Yankee Stadium that might no be able to be overcome.

In any case, awarding the game to Chicago and the Blackhawks has to be seen as a nod to the fact that hockey is finally on the comeback trail in that city after what seemed like an inevitable slide into irrelevance. But now, thanks in part to co-Calder candidates Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, things are looking up in Chicago.

One thing is for certain about the 2009 game: Tickets are going to be far more dear. The capacity at Ralph Wilson Stadium, host of the inaugural Winter Classic, was just under 74,000. Wrigley, which was home to the Bears between 1921 and 1970, seats just over 41,000. I'm sure the folks at eBay are very excited at the prospect.
Wrigley Snags Winter Classic originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Thu, 29 May 2008 09:10:00 EST .
If you remember all the way back to, stay with me here, last night then you might remember my post about a ridiculous "goal" that Finland scored on Team USA during the IIHF World Championship qualifying round. If you don't, then feel free to check out the post.

Essentially, Finland's second goal went through (or under, it's not exactly clear) the side of the net. Upon video review, it is blatant to anyone who isn't legally blind that this is, in fact, what happened. But no matter, video replay officials did not pick up on any of that. I went on to say in the post that we should be thankful that no matter how bad the officiating is in the NHL, it's not this bad.

Boy, was I wrong.

Kevin at BfloBlog pointed out today that this exact thing happened to the Sabres during the 2000 playoffs. I'll let him explain.

Sadly, it is very possible [that NHL refs are as bad as their IIHF counterparts], because it happened in an NHL game in 2000, when Philadelphia defeated Buffalo 2-1 in Game two of their playoff series [Pictured above! -- KS]. Philly's first goal came off the stick of John LeClair, but the puck actually entered through a hole in the side of the net. I was in a hotel bar in Pennsylvania watching the look on Hasek's face as he checked and re-checked his glove, thinking the puck had to have gone through his glove, because he had the net covered. Then there's the scene of Sabres GM Darcy Regier storming the replay booth and furiously pointing at the replay monitors while the replay officials just shrugged their shoulders. Remember, at this point the NHL claimed they reviewed ALL goals thanks to another no-goal incident involving the Sabres just one year previous.
So yes, I was wrong. NHL officiating is actually, unbelievably, as bad as the IIHF officiating that we saw last night. I sincerely regret the error. For your amusement, video of the goal in question follows the jump.

Errors and Omissions: Sorry That I Gave NHL Officiating Too Much Credit originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Mon, 12 May 2008 19:49:00 EST . He will forego his final year of eligibility at Boston College to turn pro. He was a fifth-round pick of the Sabres in 2005.

Gerbe led the nation in scoring this past season with 68 points (35 goals, 33 assists), and he was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given to the nation's top player. That award was won by Michigan senior Kevin Porter, who has moved on to the Phoenix Coyotes organization.

Gerbe is only five-foot-six, but his playmaking ability is second-to-none, and he is more than willing to go in the tough areas. It's never easy for a smaller player to have great success in the NHL, but he doesn't have to look past Boston College to find one who has.

New Jersey's Brian Gionta (five-foot-seven) had a wonderful four-year career at BC, and he has scored 95 goals in the three years since the lockout.
Sabres Sign Boston College Star Gerbe originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Tue, 06 May 2008 20:30:00 EST .
1. Score a hat trick in the third period.
2. Score six unanswered goals.
3. Out shoot your opponent 16-4 in the third.
4. Care about your playoff chances.
5. Respond when the home fans boo you.
6. Ah, well ... You get the point.

The Buffalo Sabres did all of the above and then some on Wednesday night in Western New York. Down 4-1 heading into the third period with their playoff hopes riding on every goal and save, they did what any team with some heart does and, you know, tried to win the game. The 10th place team in the East stormed back against the Lightning to grab victory from the jaws of defeat. Buffalo scored six unanswered goals in the third period which included a natural hat trick from Thomas Vanek to give him 31 goals on the season. I would imagine that's why they pay him the big bucks.

As you know, the standings in the Eastern Conference change faster than the wind and last night's win was a big one for Buffalo. Washington lost, meaning the Sabres jumped over them to move into 9th place in the East and are now only one point behind the idle Flyers for 8th. And now the teams in the 7-10 spots are separated by only 3 points. This race is starting to turn into a daily soap opera for hockey fans. Who's up? Who's down? Who's making out with the maid? OK, maybe not that last one but you know what I mean. FINAL: Buffalo 7, Tampa Bay 4.

You can either stop reading here or try and caulk your wagon and float it across the jump to the rest of Thursday's ice sheet. Choose wisely, pioneer!

Up next: The Rangers continue their dominance over the Devils, Anaheim tops Dallas and another player is run face first into the boards (could you guys please cut that crap out??).

When you can't beat 'em ... Well, it might be time to get a new game plan. The Rangers beat the Devils last night to extend their dominance over the division leaders to an unbeaten 6-0 record on the season. Excuse me while I pile on the Devils for a minute. They also happen to be a combined 1-8-3 against the Rangers and Islanders in the battle of the Tri-State area teams this season. The good news is that they're 41-16-4 against the rest of the NHL which also happens to be good enough to lead them to the best record in the East. And luckily for Brent Sutter his job is safe despite the fact that we are currently smack in the middle of "Lou Lamoriello Coach Firin' Season." FINAL (SO): Rangers 2, New Jersey 1.

March is clearly not a fan of the Dallas Stars. In the biggest matchup out west last night the Stars took on the Ducks looking to turn around what has been a bad month of March for Dallas. The Stars lost what I imagine must of been an absolute slog-fest, as the teams combined for three goals and 40 shots. My grandma can put more pucks on net than that. But the game went into the 'L' column for Dallas, who are now 1-6-0 in the month of March but are still sitting comfortably in fifth place. FINAL: Anaheim 2, Dallas 1.

OK, enough already with the let's-all-go-head-first-into-the-end-boards stuff. Minnesota defender Kyle Foster was taken off the ice in San Jose on a stretcher after he went face first into the boards. Great. Just great. I haven't seen the play yet, so I'll let the AP tell you about it. FanHouse will certainly have more coverage as the story develops.

Foster ... was slightly ahead of [Torrey] Mitchell as they chased a puck toward the boards behind the Minnesota goal. The 5-foot-11 San Jose center put out his arms just enough to disrupt the precarious balance of the 6-foot-5 Foster, who already appeared to be falling when the players' skates collided and he went hard into the boards.

Foster remained on the ice for 12 minutes while medical personnel put a splint on Foster's leg and strapped him to a backboard. Foster was moving his head and talking to paramedics when they lifted him off the ice, and he shook hands with Sharks center Jeremy Roenick.

Obviously, not something anyone wants to happen but has happened all too often this season. The final, which now seems really insignificant, was 4-3 San Jose in a shootout.

That's because Simmons used the rhetorical cop-out of "there are those who suggest" rather than identifying the accusing party or acknowledging this intriguing notion as his own:
There are those who suggest that Campbell was under great pressure, quite possibly from the Players' Association, not to sign a deal in Buffalo that would have undercut the market place of a high-end free agent defenceman. That is, too often, the dilemma for a pending free agent: Does the player do what is right for himself, or does he stand up for the supposed greater good of his union brethren? By interpreting Campbell's body language and hearing his spoken words, it was clear he didn't want to or wasn't ready to leave Buffalo. Maybe he should have spoken to Ray Bourque or Martin Brodeur, about the success athletes can have in singular markets, earning less than they could somewhere else.
Yes, that would be the same Ray Bourque who demanded a trade to a contender back in 2000. It's an interesting theory -- unfortunately, there are those who suggest Steve Simmons is full of it.

Lyle Richardson doesn't buy this theory, as the market for free-agent defensemen won't live or die based on Brian Campbell's salary -- I'd argue that Dion Phaneuf's recent contract will have much more influence for years to come. Matt over on Battle of Alberta breaks down the economics:
For the gajillionth time folks, the total amount earned by NHLPA members is a fixed sum determined solely by NHL hockey-related revenues. If Brian Campbell makes an extra million dollars, that comes (proportionally) out of the pockets of every other player in the league. The NHLPA has no reason to want to torque the salary of any individual player (or group of players in comparable situations, e.g. #1 defensemen). And indeed, since 2006, the NHLPA has stepped aside at player arbitration hearings because of the inherent conflict: more money for Player #1 means less for Players #2 thru #750.
I assumed that Campbell might take a hometown discount to remain in Buffalo. He didn't, but I don't believe it's because of some grand conspiracy by the NHLPA to jack up free agent prices, if only because defensemen aren't all cut from the same cloth. What percentage of Brian Campbell is someone like Michal Rozsival worth? It's apples and oranges.

Campbell wasn't looking for his union brethren or his Buffalo teammates -- he was looking out for No. 1, and who can blame him? The only problem I have with Soupy is what Calgary Herald writer Bruce Dowbiggin cited recently, which is his participation in an embarrassing trend in the NHL where every selfish free-agent-to-be thinks they're Gretzky leaving Edmonton:
Why is it, then, that players who do use their leverage look so glum? Brian Campbell made his contractual bed in Buffalo then acted as if the Sabres had stolen his puppy. Ditto Ryan Smyth last year in Edmonton. If you're Sabres GM Darcy Regier -- who has squandered Chris Drury, Daniel Briere and Campbell inside of a year -- you can look glum. But Campbell? In San Jose with Joe Thornton? Please.

For Brian Campbell, a Question of Loyalty originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Mon, 03 Mar 2008 09:02:00 EST .
As big a deal as Super Tuesday is in the U.S., I'm afraid my "Vote For Rory" reference is a bit dated. Still, I was amused enough by last year's grassroots campaign for the depth defenseman for the All-Star game, plus the NHL's subsequent vote-tampering that I hope the joke's still got some shelf life.

Here's a creative question for the comments: If you could select any NHL coach or general manager to run for U.S. President, who'd get your vote? Who's got the right mix of leadership, charisma, and integrity to turn this nation into a cup contender? Wide Right!), so losing is nothing new and unusual to the people in that wintry city.

That said, the Buffalo Sabres' current problems must be enough to give more than a few Buffalonians a monster case of heartburn. With last night's 2-1 loss to the downstate New York Rangers, the Sabres have now lost TEN games in a row, and are falling from playoff contention with each passing day.

The Sabres are 0-5-5 in their last 10 games. They haven't won since Dec. 22 in Philadelphia and, in fact, are the only team in the NHL without a win in the 2008 calendar year.

"We didn't make a lot of good plays," coach Lindy Ruff said. "We didn't make good decisions and Al [Kotalik] pounded the puck right into Betts every time. I can't yell, 'Don't shoot it,' but you have to bury your head and move it around those guys. We didn't and that was a disappointing part of the game."

Perhaps Lindy and assistant James Patrick ought to lace 'em up and give directions from the ice. At this point, the Sabres need some creative ideas if they are to put a W in the win column some time this calendar year.If the Sabres losing ways wasn't bad enough for Buffalonians, the possibility of losing enough player, Brian Campbell (the guy who just loved the Winter Classic), has reared itself after contract talks broke off between the parties.

Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier admitted today that he's disappointed with defenseman Brian Campbell's decision to suspend negotiations on a new contract with the team.

"He wants to leave it till after the season and work on it at that point," Regier said following practice in HSBC Arena. "We certainly respect that and that's his right.

Translation: Brian Campbell is going to follow Chris Drury and Daniel Briere and hightail it the hell out of there after some GM waves a pile of money in front of his face. Sorry, Buffalo, but players just don't seem to want to play there.

Question: Who was the only player to die during the course of an NHL game?

Answer: Bill Masterton, for whom the Masterton Trophy is named after. While Masterton was never able to recover from his vicious injury, his name will forever be linked to those players who overcome serious injury (such as Bryan Berard's loss of vision in one eye) and persevere against tough odds.

I mention this simply because it was recently the 40th anniversary of Masterton's tragic death, one of the darkest periods in the NHL's long history.

Masterton's impact was immediate. He scored the first goal in North Stars history. But tragedy struck on Jan. 13, 1968 - the first season of the new 12-team National Hockey League. In a game against the Oakland Seals, Masterton was hit by Oakland's Larry Cahan and Ron Harris.

"He threw a pass over to me and as I was receiving the pass I was looking over towards them and you could see that he got hit," recalled Connolly. "You looked at Bill on the ice and you could see that it was big trouble."

"When he fell, and his head hit the ice, you could actually hear it from the bench," added daughter Sally Masterton. "And the team doctor said he could hear the pop sound and he knew right away that there was something wrong."

While today's players are bigger and faster, at least they are better equipped with stronger padding and HELMETS. We've had some close calls (Malarchuk, Fischer, Pronger), but thankfully no more on-ice deaths ... yet.

Plenty of people have their ideas and opinions about making the NHL better. Apparently, The Golden Mouth, Brett Hull, would love it if more players spoke their minds, rather than the scripted cliches they spout 99 times out of 100.

OK. Fine by me, but that's not likely going to happen. No, what really got me was the 10 suggestions that this writer for MSNBC, Kevin DuPont, had for the NHL to change for the 'better'

European quotas. OK, guilty, report me to the Xenophobia Hotline. All I know is, other than prime European talent, North American crowds more easily identify with homeboys rather than the vast faceless talents from Russia, Finland, Sweden, et al. On a nightly roster of 18 skaters and two goalies, mandate that a total of 17 must be North American-born.

While European players might not connect quite as well as home grown boys, having a quote of one per team is the dumbest idea I've heard since Tila Tequila decided to open her mouth and 'sing'. (Most of his other ideas suck just as much, trust me) What about Owen Nolan? He's actually born in Northern Ireland, and would need a quota spot under this system, even though he's really a Canadian player. Ever thought of that?

Yes, let's vastly reduce the overall talent level of the game and deny the NHL fans the chance to see the best talent that Europe has to offer. Hell, even Don Cherry would think this guy is out to lunch with a hamster.

Gratuitous YouTube Embed: "OH!!!!! Campbell just destroyed Umberger!!" is all that needs to be said about this classic shot.

The Ice Sheet: Sad Times for Sabres Fans originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Thu, 17 Jan 2008 09:03:00 EST . (You didn't think I was going to mention that asinine regulation that treats a puck over the glass with the same level of punishment as a high-sticking minor, did you?) The rule has also made for more exciting hockey, as teams leading late in the game are no longer able to ice their way to victory -- a tactic that had become the tedious hockey equivalent of basketball's foul-shooting exhibitions to end regulation.

But there's a loophole to the icing rule, and Lindy Ruff helped expose it in the Winter Classic. Pittsburgh had all the momentum late in the game, forcing the Sabres to ice the puck rather than face another wave of attacking Penguins. The NBC announcers predicted Ruff would call a time out, and call one he did -- allowing his defenders to rest before heading back out on the ice for a critical face-off.

If the intent of the rule is to punish the team that ices the puck, let's take it all the way: Coaches should not be allowed to call a TO in that situation. Yes, the same players that were on the ice before the time out have to return after it's over -- having caught their collective breath. Yes, time outs in hockey are intended to be used sparingly and strategically, and burning one in a defensive situation means not having one in a critical offensive moment even later in the game. I can understand that latter argument. But what other penalty in hockey has a "Get Out of Jail Free" card like the icing rule has? It cheapens what is, in fact, a pretty good rules change for the NHL.
A No-Brainer Rule Change originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Thu, 03 Jan 2008 08:21:00 EST . Bringing the game back to its outdoor roots certainly breaks the monotony of the long NHL season, and it was nice to see our favorite sport get some positive national attention.

With the game still somewhat fresh in our hungover minds, here is a little photo album I cobbled together from some of the fine images that Getty Images provided for us.

It was quite a distance from the stadium to the rink for the players. What normally takes a matter of seconds took about three minutes. If a player or coach had to go to the washroom, they probably much had to hold it in.

The fans were certainly excited. It's frickin freezing!!! I'm quite impressed that anyone can stand out there and not get frostbite.

Here, we see the fans cheering the entire Canadian Air Force after their successful occupation of Buffalo and rolling out of their new Canadian flag.

Jodie from The Sidney Crosby Show blog attended the match and sent me this photo from her vantage point. Not all of them held contests for fans to vote on, such as the San Jose Sharks did, especially if the club was founded many decades ago.

Some names make sense instantly, such as the New York Islanders (geography), Anaheim Mighty Ducks (duh!), and the Washington Capitals. Meanwhile, most Americans wonder what the hell a 'Canuck' is (it's slang for 'Canadian'), while most Canadian fans associated Rangers with Texas, or Jellystone Park, and not New York City.

Over at Dallasstars.com, Kurt Daniels put together a brief history of each team's name selection, which should give you the edge in any trivia contest. It's a nice list for people like me who are too lazy to go searching for this kind of stuff.

Fan involvement: I was surprised to see even a few older teams took naming suggestions from the fans. The Sabres, Avalanche, Blue Jackets, Oilers, Panthers, Kings, Wild, Predators, Devils, Flyers, Coyotes, Penguins, Sharks, and Capitals all solicited fan input. Yep, just about half of them.

Perusing the list, I found the Sabres' story to be one of the more interesting. Here is a team name that sounds quite cool, but doesn't intuitively make a whole lot of sense. When I picture the city Buffalo, I hardly think of man-to-man sword fights over a debutant dressed in her Sunday best.

When the city of Buffalo was awarded a franchise, the owners, brothers Seymour and Northrup Knox, had a few criteria for what they wanted in a name. They were looking for one that was not in use by any other professional franchise, could be easily used in their marketing campaigns and stayed away from the traditional Buffalo references like Bills, Bison or Braves. A contest was held and from over 13,000 entries, only four offered Sabres. But, the name was exactly what the team wanted.

Aahh, the Sabres ... always the underdog. As for the Rangers, it seems there is a 'Tex' connection, after all. Go check out the link for the goods on all 30 clubs.
Where Did They Get THAT Name From? originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Wed, 02 Jan 2008 14:26:00 EST . Meanwhile, the local ratings in Buffalo were interesting, according to the Buffalo News:
The rating peaked at 43.1 at 4:30 p.m., shortly before the Pens' Sidney Crosby scored the game-winning goal in a shootout. It averaged a 37.4 rating from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and a 40.5 rating from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The high ratings are impressive, but not even close to the 46.9 rating that the Buffalo Bills had for a late-season game with the Cleveland Browns that had playoff implications. Somewhat surprisingly, CBC's coverage of the Winter Classic didn't register enough of a rating to register here.
No word yet on how the Winter Classic fared against competition from college football games -- or how "The Music of Seal on Ice" built off of the Classic's massive lead-in.
Overnight Ratings for NHL Winter Classic Exceed NBC Projections originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Wed, 02 Jan 2008 13:36:00 EST .

"What are you putting on now? Not that 'Twilight Zone' marathon again."

"Nope. A little thing called 'The Winter Classic.' Pittsburgh and Buffalo are playing a hockey game in a football stadium today. It's going to be awesome."

"Give me the remote, I'll find something to ... wait, WTF? There's, like, 100,000 people there, it's snowing like hell and Bob Costas is standing in front of a hockey rink."

"I told you it'd be cool. I mean, not as cool as watching Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve..."

"Actually, Greg, the word is cruel. You've been doing the same Tom Carvel impression every year since Dick Clark came back from the stroke. Hey, who's this Crosby guy they keep showing?"

And with that, a grand experiment began: Using an outdoor game to attempt to sell hockey to a gaggle of 20-something females with a self-confessed puck allergy.

(Coming Up Next: Big Time Hollywood Stars at the Winter Classic, Scandalous and Hilarious Puck Headlines, Tonight's Must-See Games, a Great Little Bud Light Tribute to Hockey and Some Guy Who's Convinced the Winter Classic was Fixed.)

We only watched the majority of the first period together, but this much was clear: The New Year's Day Winter Classic provided an entry point for even the most casual fan that a hockey game in an arena does not. Yes, the NHL was blessed with picturesque conditions that won't necessarily be repeated in future editions of the event (should they occur). But it also gave the newbies I was watching the game with the chance to break the sport down in a nearly anthropological way: How do they make the ice? Why is the goalie wearing the ski cap? Is playing outdoors any harder than playing indoors, and what is it about this sport that makes that so?

These were the questions being tossed around at the start of the game; gradually, however, the conversation centered on one thing: Sidney Crosby. Perhaps it was NBC's nearly singular focus on the Penguins star, but it was clear the newbies were fascinated by him. "He's a captain and he's, like, 20 years-old? Do his teammates even listen to him?" "What makes him so much better than the other players?" "How did they get HD quality footage of him as a little boy walking through spooky corn stalks to play pond hockey?" (OK, they didn't actually ask that last question.)

For a casual hockey fan watching Crosby for the first time, he didn't disappoint. There was that Tiger Woods-like puck juggling act into the Sabres zone. There was that spin-o-rama move that resulted in a tough save for Ryan Miller. (Who absolutely ruled on that AMP Energy commercial, by the way.) There was a little bit of that Crosby feistiness in a scrum near the net, and then there was of course his anti-climatic game-winner in the shootout. "Why wouldn't it be, right?" Mike Emrick exclaimed after telling fans the game would be headed to the skills competition. I think Doc is a fairly brilliant and sly individual, so I can only assume he was pointing out the hilarity in the Winter Classic, the NHL's version of a unicorn at the circus, being decided by the shootout, the NHL's version of a real! live! mermaid! at the carnival.

The debate will now begin as to when, where and if the NHL should make an outdoor (or dome stadium) game an annual event. My FanHouse buddy Eric McErlain would be comfortable seeing it every three or four years. While it's difficult to separate the novelty from the real success of the event, I can't see how the NHL doesn't mount this again next season based on the unbelievable buzz the game created on what's been college football's day for decades.

But it has to remain on New Year's Day. John Collins, the league's senior executive vice president, spoke out of both sides of his mouth to The New York Times yesterday, saying the NHL wanted to stake a claim to Jan. 1 but that the date wasn't "etched in stone." Bollocks -- it is now, thanks to the tremendous job done by NBC, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Buffalo Sabres and 71,217 frozen fans. The only time the Winter Classic isn't on Jan. 1 is if, by some quirk, the NFL is. And the only way there shouldn't be a Winter Classic every season is if the novelty doesn't transfer to other American locations; and even then, there's always Edmonton.

I have more Winter Classic thoughts and coverage over on Deadspin, where I'll be penning the NHL Closer for the next few weeks.

Puck Headlines

The League is waiting with breathless anticipation to see if millions of college football fans flipping over to the Sci-Fi Channel's "Twilight Zone" marathon during New Year's Day bowl game commercial breaks will instead stop and watch an outdoor hockey game on NBC -- at least long enough to register in the Nielsen's. At the very least, football fans might be enticed to stick around and see Sidney Crosby do something rather uncommon in Ralph Wilson Stadium ... like completing three consecutive passes.

It's an important day for hockey in the U.S., as the NHL has a visually striking venue to sell its product to casual sports fans and NBC has a chance to see if hockey can succeed on television under P.T. Barnum circumstances. (Up Next: It's the Philadelphia Flyers skating against the Tom Collins Champions on Ice, to the music of best-selling recording artist Seal!) So what's the worst that can happen? The Tocchet Line handicaps the field:

Wow, What a Concept: Snow in Buffalo (2:1) - As of Thursday morning, The Weather Channel ("Giving America a Reason To Listen To Smooth Jazz Since 1982") is forecasting snow showers and temperatures around 32 degrees for New Year's Day in Buffalo. Sam Flood, the producer of the Winter Classic for NBC Sports, said he "would love a light dusting, flurries that would happen on and off, to have that visual affect, and that would be spectacular, but not too much more than that." According to Flood, if conditions are unplayable there actually is a snow date for the Winter Classic on Jan. 2 ... you know, when the majority of people who'd care to watch the game will be back in their office cubicles.

Ice Glare (4:1) - If the skies aren't cloudy, then the afternoon sun plus fresh ice equals an intense glare that should have players running for their eye black. Extremely worst case scenario: A perfect storm of blinding ice glare and high-powered bifocals ignites announcer Doc Emrick's eyes on fire, and a confused viewing public tunes in to see Eddie Olczyk doing the game with what appears to be Ghost Rider.

Stuuuck, Stuuuuuck (5:1) - The game is delayed for hours as emergency officials attempt to remove Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller's tongue from a frozen goal-post following Jarkko Ruutu's sinister triple-dog-dare.

Gary Roberts (10:1) - A giant melee breaks out when one of the Sabres hears the veteran Penguins forward proclaiming, "You think this is bad? When I was your age, we had to skate back and forth to the game in 50 feet of snow ... UPHILL BOTH WAYS!" for the hundredth, and final, time.

Getting Offensive (15:1) - Remember the final score of the Heritage Classic? It was 4-3, with Montreal topping Edmonton -- and that was in conditions where it was minus-22 degrees Fahrenheit with the wind chill. There should be offense in the Winter Classic, especially considering the teams involved. But if the ratio of "American Gladiators" promos to scoring chances is 20:1, it doesn't matter where they hold the game -- it's a snoozer.

Ice Balls (20:1) - Fans who have been drinking since 5 p.m. the previous day plus a football stadium filled with snow plus a conference rival from Pittsburgh wearing easy-to-target blue uniforms equals ... hoo-boy...

The Meltdown (30:1) - Someone sneaks in 50 suicidal wings from Anchor Bar and accidentally tosses them into the rink during a first-period hat trick; a fleet of Zambonis frantically attempts to save the ice as the wing sauce melts through it like Alien blood.

Old Man Winter (50:1) - NHL officials believe they have the weather under control after kidnapping Old Man Winter in the bowels of the stadium ... only to discover they've instead nabbed a curmudgeonly Marv Levy.

The Ned Braden (100:1) - Overcome by the immense crowd, the celebratory atmosphere and the joy of the new year, Penguins forward Jordan Staal performs a showstopping strip tease a la Ned Braden in "Slap Shot" ... until teammates Georges Laraque and Brooks Orpik "politely" ask him to stop.

Previously on FanHouse:

On New Year's Day, the NHL Winter Classic will be played at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo, New York. Today, crews began the process of transforming the NFL stadium into an outdoor NHL rink. Within hours of the Buffalo Bills regular season finale at the stadium yesterday, crews began the work of trying to convert it into a skate-able surface.

Per TSN:

"Crews began by removing the goal posts, and laying large tarps, held down by wooden boards, to protect the field. The initial work was completed despite wind gusts of over 50 kilometres per hour and a steady and sometimes blinding snowfall."
"Blinding snowfall." Now that's an interesting obstacle to face at work. I know that some of us may get paper cuts or have to attend the occasional meeting, but blinding snow is something all together different. Then again, you could be an Alaskan crab fisherman. Regardless of which is worse, things got a little hairy, if only for a minute. Workers at RWS were subject to a scary tarp attack (baseball saw a few of these this season).

"a heavy gust picked up one of the tarps - 30 yards long and covering the width of the football field - and lifted it into the stands of the east end zone. Several workers managed to duck beneath the tarp in time, and nobody was injured."
Tarp attacks are now the #1 threat to the safety of outdoor hockey games. Please folks, be careful during the holiday season. I don't want to have to come back from break and be forced to write a post about how you were mauled by a tarp. Unless it was hilarious, videotaped and put on YouTube. In that case, I'm all for it. That's assuming, of course, that you were not badly injured.

Previously on FanHouse

What, No Howie Mandel at the Winter Classic?
NHL Winter Classic Redux in Happy Valley
Buffalo, For Christmas, You Get Ice originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Mon, 24 Dec 2007 21:15:00 EST . I took part in an informative conference call yesterday in the wake of NBC's announcement that Bob Costas would finally have the opportunity to match the prestige of appearing in "BASEketball" by hosting the NHL's outdoor hockey game in Buffalo on New Year's Day 2008.

NHL on NBC vets Doc Emrick, Eddie Olczyk and producer Sam Flood were joined by newbies "Mad" Mike Milbury and Costas, whose focus is clearly on making a game between what are currently two non-playoff teams into something transcendent, saying that "you don't have to be somebody who follows the NHL day in and day out to enjoy it as an event."

Being that this is a large-scale sporting event with an opportunity for some NBC cross-promotion, someone asked Flood if there would be an NBC celebrity component at the Winter Classic, and specifically about arguably the network's biggest prime-time star and most prominent Canadian, Howie "Deal or No Deal" Mandel. "In terms of Howie Mandel, no plans at this time to have him at the game site. Remember, Jan. 1 is a different kind of day to have these celebs in different locations," said Flood.

Having Mandel at the game, or on any hockey telecast, would obviously be a coup based on his current popularity and general appeal; but it would also be the safe, obvious play. If NBC and the NHL really wanted to create some buzz, they should draft some of the network's stars whose hockey credentials are a little less established. Who isn't tuning in to the Winter Classic pregame show to hear Tracy Morgan of "30 Rock" do five minutes on hockey? Of course, the probability of getting Tracy Morgan to Buffalo, NY on New Year's Day afternoon for a hockey game is about the same as the probability that Jamie-Lynn Spears was going to save it 'til marriage. Some other points of interest from the conference call...

Costas said he wasn't assigned by NBC to host the Winter Classic, but rather was asked by Flood and sports television guru Dick Ebersol, who had already run the idea by Gary Bettman. Costas said yes immediately. "If it's a big enough event, I guess people expect me to in some way be involved," he said. Costas clearly sees himself as a presenter and moderator here, rather than a more active host like he is on something like "Inside the NFL" on HBO. "It's not unlike when I host the Kentucky Derby or the U.S. Open golf. Other guys have more expertise in horse racing and golf who are on our team than I do," he said. "My job is to provide the overview and set the scene, which is what people, I guess, have come to expect from me in my various roles at NBC. I'm not going to be analyzing the game or providing any of the bits of information that Doc Emerik does so well."

Flood said that the potential for Costas to return and host the Stanley Cup Finals is contingent on his pre-Olympics schedule.

Flood was asked what this Winter Classic will look like if Buffalo has a warm Jan. 1. He said the ice will be in no danger, as it's controlled by the same technology as is found in hockey arenas. "Unless it's 80 degrees out, they'll be in good shape," said Flood.

(An aside: It's sort of a shame Howie Mandel won't be appearing at the Winter Classic. I would have loved to have seen the self-professed germaphobe take a dare and insert his hand in a sweat-drenched Reebok EDGE System glove. It would have been as intense as the time when Flash Gordon reached inside of that tree trunk on Mongo, only without the eminent coolness of Timothy Dalton watching close by.)

Jim Williams from the DC Examiner asked about making the Winter Classic a permanent thing, which I found odd because I thought it was generally assumed that this was basically a pilot -- to put it in television terms -- for an annual NHL New Year's Day tent-pole event, should hockey remain on NBC. "The League is going to make the decision on that. We think it's a wonderful start," said Flood, diplomatically.

I asked Milbury about taking over the role that Brett Hull failed to play last season as the broadcast's provocateur. "I'm going to call the game as I relate to it. I'm entering the third period of my life here. I've had experiences at every level ... I just hope to be able to bring some measure of candor when it comes to the game and then relate it to experiences in my life. I didn't go to Bob Costas Broadcasting School. I kind of grew up in the hockey world, and I carry my passion on my sleeve. If I guy is dogging it, I'll let you know," he said. "I'll broadcast the way I played: obnoxiously."

From an event coverage standpoint, I asked Flood about the technology NBC will trot out for this game, referencing the "rail cam" that made the Heritage Classic so bitchin' cool on Canadian television. "We want to be bigger than the rail cam. The rail cam, to me, was not the right thing for an outdoor game. The outdoor game, you want to see the spectacle and the size and scope of it."

To that end, Flood said there will be the same number of cameras as the network uses to cover the Finals, plus one more: a camera in a plane over the stadium, proving aerial shots like the ones seen on "Sunday Night Football." Flood said part of the game will be covered by the plane, which sounds intriguing: We're either finally going to get an NHL game presented with the simplistic glory of the overhead perspective in NHL '94 for the SEGA Genesis, or we're going to be seeing what looks like 10 raisins in shoebox as filmed from Ganymede.

In the season after the lockout, he was thrown to the wolves again, playing 67 games and picking up 33 wins for a high-flying Canucks team.

Then he was traded for Roberto Luongo. Then he was beat up by then-teammate Ed Belfour. And then he landed in Phoenix, where a wacky three-goalie rotation became a four-goalie one when the Coyotes claimed Ilya Bryzgalov on waivers last month.

After two games in the AHL, Auld's exile to San Antonio ended when the Bruins, desperate for someone to spell a terrible run of injuries in their crease, made a footnote of a deal to bring him to Beantown.

So, there Auld was last night in Buffalo, making his second start in three nights with his new team, still decked out in garish purple Phoenix garb (note: his helmet has a funky cactus on it). And boy has he made good on his second chance.

A 2-1 win in Toronto on Saturday on Hockey Night in Canada, making 25 saves. A 4-1 win in Buffalo yesterday, with another 44 stops.

It's only two games, but Auld's strong play may make for interesting decisions when Manny Fernandez and Tim Thomas are ready for a return.

Around the league...

Ducks 4, Blue Jackets 3: Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf continue to be the engine that drives the Anaheim offense, as both youngsters picked up two points here in an overtime win in Columbus. Of note for the Blue Jackets: Kris Beech picked up his sixth point in five games since being called up, and played big minutes alongside Nikolai Zherdev.

Capitals 3, Devils 2: Baby steps for new coach Bruce Boudreau. He's managed to coax some solid play from defensemen Mike Green and Shaonne Morrison, and Nick Backstrom played huge minutes in this one last night. The rookie has 10 points in nine games under new management.

Maple Leafs 6, Lightning 1: Stop the presses, Toronto's on a roll. Or, to be more specific, Vesa Toskala is. The Buds new starter has allowed only 10 goals in his last six starts, and has five of his 11 wins this season in those games. Hal Gill really deserves more credit for how well he's played this season, and he picked up two assists here.

Red Wings 2, Predators 1: Ho hum, another win for Motown. Detroit's got a 10 point lead in the Western Conference and is on pace for an unfathomable 126-point season so far. Secondary scoring has played a big role recently, with players like Valtteri Filppula starting to chip in. He scored on a penalty shot here to give him six goals and 12 points in his last 20 games.

Stars 5, Oilers 4: Two unheralded young blueliners who really shone in this one: Tom Gilbert for Edmonton, who picked up a goal in 28:20 minutes ice time, and Matt Niskanen, another American who had a goal and two assists while playing big minutes with Sergei Zubov.

Kings 4, Canucks 2: Roberto Luongo sat this one out with a rib injury, and the Kings peppered replacement Curtis Sanford with 31 shots. Jack Johnson's been pretty under the radar this season but has been one of the best Los Angeles blueliners, and the same can be said for young Swede Alex Edler for the Canucks.

Links I liked:
New York Times feature on Wayne Gretzky
Michel Goulet remembers the Nordiques

And a video of a young Sid Crosby:

The Ice Sheet: Auld's Return originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Tue, 11 Dec 2007 10:00:00 EST . How can we not mention gore and bring up the goriest incident the NHL has ever experienced?

For those feint of heart, I'd skip this altogether. Otherwise, let us recount one of the scariest incidents in the league's history, just to spook the hell out of you.

March 22, 1989 - Clint Malarchuk nearly bled to death on the ice after taking a skate blade to the throat. As defender Uwe Krupp and Blackhawks forward Steve Tuttle drove towards the net, Tuttle feel and somehow his skate ended up hitting Malarchuk in the worst spot possible.

I was 10 years old at the time, and remember seeing the incident on TV. It still remains one of my most vivid memories from that period in my life, and my first real experience with anything close to death (other than the deer my father shot on his hunting trips). I can't imagine being one of his teammates on the ice, feeling helpless at Malarchuk continued to lose blood at an alarming rate.

"I did think I was done," said Malarchuk 13 years later, "Somewhere I'd heard that if you cut your jugular vein you've got a matter of minutes, like three minutes. I was going through the minutes preparing to die. I thought I had just three minutes to live and I've got a lot of repenting to do in three minutes."

The sight was so grizzly that 2 spectators suffered heart attacks and 3 of Malarchuk's teammates vomited while still on the ice.

It was estimated that if the skate hit 1/8 inch higher on Malarchuk's jugular, he would have been dead within 2 minutes. In the dressing room and on his way to the hospital, doctors spent 90 minutes and used over 300 stitches to close the wound.

Thankfully, there is a happy ending to this story. Malarchuk recovered from this incident (a week later, he was on the ice!) and played hockey for many more years. People woke up to the fact that goalies were at risk for injuries around the neck area, and now goalies wear neck guards.

Here is the visual recount of the incident. Extreme blood warning.

NHL's Goriest Scene: Clint Malarchuk originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Wed, 31 Oct 2007 11:24:00 EST .
