We're joined this week by Anthony Curatolo, who is a senior writer at Crash the Crease and also has a podcast every week. Since Anthony is an Islanders fan, we also let him talk up his red-hot team and discuss the Blackhawks' impending cap woes. Listen after the jump.

Five-year deals are coming for forwards Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, and defenseman Duncan Keith is apparently going to sign a mammoth 13-year deal for less annual money.

This is all being thrown onto a team that is already up against the NHL's salary cap. Even if the cap doesn't fall as much as previously expected for next season, Chicago is facing a harsh reality: in order to get under the cap, it's likely they'll have to make some deals. With that in mind, we thought we'd take a look at what players are in the most danger of being dealt before the 2010-11 season.

While it's possible that Chicago will make some sort of cap-clearing trade before the March trade deadline, a move during the next offseason seems to be a greater likelihood. After all, if this team is truly a Stanley Cup threat, why break them up when you're safely under the cap for this season? It's next season that general manager Stan Bowman has to be more concerned about.

(Cap figures cited are from the ever-popular nhlnumbers.com.)

Brian Campbell, defenseman, $7.14 million

Campbell is the easiest target, thanks to his mammoth cap figure and somewhat underwhelming return. The Blackhawks are also deep on defense, thanks to guys like Keith, Brent Seabrook, and Cam Barker, all of whom are 25 or younger.

Of course, that cap figure and somewhat underwhelming performance are also reasons why Campbell can't be moved. If the goal here is to clear cap space for future seasons, the Blackhawks can't be taking on any big contracts, and there simply aren't a lot of teams who are looking for a $7 million defenseman who doesn't defend well and isn't that big of a factor offensively.

That said, Campbell was highly-sought as a free agent not even two years ago. If the Blackhawks were willing to listen, you would have to think teams like Nashville, St. Louis or Colorado would want to talk at some point. All of them have cap space, cheap guys who could be attractive to Chicago, and they're struggling badly on the power play right now.

Approximate Trade Odds: 50 to 1

Cam Barker, defenseman, $3 million

A guy like Barker is a better bet than Campbell for a number of reasons. For starters, he has a long-term deal for a low amount of money (he's signed for two more years after this season). At just 23, he clearly has a bigger upside than Campbell, and he has similar skills as a power-play quarterback. Because of his lesser salary, he's a more realistic fit on a number of teams who could use a little help on the blue line. While Chicago won't gain as much cap space, they can probably be a bit choosier about his destination, meaning Eastern Conference teams like Carolina, Ottawa, or Buffalo could come into play.

Approximate Trade Odds: 15 to 1

Cristobal Huet, goalie, $5.625 million

Some would consider his cap figure and near-total lack of playoff success to be non-starters. However, Huet has put up respectable numbers so far, and there are plenty of teams who will run into trouble in goal. Once that point comes, they could be willing to take on a veteran who has a lot of game experience in the NHL.

It's hard to identify teams who might be interested in Huet, but you have to wonder if Los Angeles -- with a ton of young players and even more cap room -- might be interested in adding an older goaltender, just in case Jonathan Quick continues his up-and-down play.

Approximate Trade Odds: 12 to 1

Dustin Byfuglien, forward, $3 million

Byfuglien is a valuable player, no doubt. He willingly goes into the tough areas, does a ton of dirty work, and uses his size and toughness to help protect his highly-skilled teammates. Given Brian Burke's philosophy, he'd be a great fit on Team USA for the Winter Olympics.

That said, this is Chicago's deepest position, especially once Marian Hossa returns from his shoulder injury. This will be happening sooner rather than later, by the way.

There should be a slew of teams beating down Bowman's door should he ever show a willingness to trade Byfuglien. Teams like Buffalo, Tampa Bay, and even Atlanta could use a little more grit around the net, and Byfuglien can give them that.

Approximate Trade Odds: 8 to 1

Patrick Sharp, forward, $4 million

While it would be an incredibly difficult decision for Bowman, this is the one that probably makes the most sense. Sharp is 27, so he's likely about to peak as an offensive threat. He is signed through 2011-2012 at a relatively reasonable number. It likely makes him expendable, because the Blackhawks already have big-time scoring threats like Hossa, Kane, and Toews, along with secondary guys Kris Versteeg and Troy Brouwer.

It's not that Sharp is not good enough or that he's not worth keeping. He's easily the best player on this list. However, his skills are not unique on this team, and while you are right to argue that Campbell and Huet would be better guys to trade, Sharp gives them the best combination of two important qualities: "Player they wouldn't miss a ton" and "Player other teams will actually want."

His addition would be huge on teams like Los Angeles, Colorado, or -- if Chicago wants to trade him to the East -- Ottawa.

Approximate Trade Odds: 5 to 1
'Hawks Likely Have Some Dealing to Do originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Thu, 19 Nov 2009 13:00:00 EST . While Ladd was called for elbowing, that doesn't appear to be an elbow. And will the NHL's bizarre disciplinary system step in and hand out additional punishment? Probably not, but it's anybody's guess. It was my dream for so long. My least favorite thing would probably have to be living under the microscope. Everyone is watching you.

Do you have any superstitions or pregame rituals?

I don't really have a lot of superstitions. In fact, we don't have a lot of superstitious guys (on the Blackhawks). If it works, I stick with it. As far as rituals go, I do tape my stick the same way all the time.

Who is the one player in the NHL you would like to throw a good, hard, clean check on?

Probably Johan Franzen from Detroit. Last year in the playoffs we got in a scrum after a whistle, and he took my mouthpiece from me and threw it on the ice.

If you could be one teammate, who would you be and why?

That's easy. Marian Hossa. Video after the jump.

Yeah, that appears to be clean. Mitchell doesn't leave his feet, doesn't lead with an elbow, and the hit doesn't appear to be directed at Toews' head. Just a good, solid open-ice hit.

The problem, if you're the Canucks, is that the play was stopped (negating a two-on-none break) because the Blackhawks decided to respond with an attempt at some vigilante justice, which is a continuing (and disturbing) trend in today's NHL following clean hits. Kris Versteeg ended up taking the extra penalty for Chicago, giving Vancouver a power play, but it cost the Canucks a prime scoring opportunity.

It's obvious that Toews was shaken up following the play, and that's unfortunate. Nobody wants to see him (or any other player) injured on the ice. But hockey is a physical game, and when players play within the rules (as Mitchell did in this case) they shouldn't have to drop the gloves and defend themselves.

Clean hit. Chicago goaltender Cristobal Huet was pulled in favor of Antti Niemi after giving up three goals on five shots, and the game appeared to be well in hand; you could chalk up a "W" for the Flames.

Not so fast.

What followed over the final 48 minutes of regulation was completely unexpected, as the Blackhawks rallied to tie the game at five, before winning 26 seconds into overtime on a goal from defenseman Brent Seabrook. The 'Hawks also received goals from John Madden, Patrick Kane, Dustin Byfuglien, Dave Bolland, and Patrick Sharp, while Mikka Kiprusoff was the goaltender on the hook for all six goals (on 33 shots) for Calgary.

It's tied for the largest comeback win in NHL history according to the Elias Sports Bureau. For the most recent 5-0 comeback, you just have to go back to February 19, 2007, and the Montreal Canadiens rallying to defeat the New York Rangers. Though, they didn't get the win until that game went to a shootout (back in the day, it would have simply ended in a tie).

So we go back to the original question: Does this get remembered as a great comeback by Chicago, a choke job by Calgary, or a happy medium that involves a little from column A and a little from column B?

On one hand, you have to give Chicago credit for not packing it in and starting to look ahead to Wednesday's game against Edmonton when it was 5-0 in the first period. But you also have to look at the Flames and wonder how a 5-0 lead turns into a 6-5 loss.

The good news for the Flames is they won't have much time to dwell on this one as their next game is Tuesday night in Columbus.
Incredible Comeback or Epic Choke Job? originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Mon, 12 Oct 2009 23:15:00 EST . According to the simulation, Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins will repeat as Cup Champions, defeating cover boy Patrick Kane and the Chicago Blackhawks in six games. Most junior, college, minor league, and professional arenas have a horn of some sort. It blares at a usually high volume whenever the home team scores. At some rinks, the horn also goes off when the home team takes the ice, or when they win a game.

Since the goal horn has become as much a part of the arena atmosphere as the organ used to be, it seems like a good time to rank the best of the best around the NHL. The top five, with obligatory YouTubes, are after the jump.

Honorable Mention

Carolina Hurricanes, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators

No. 5: New York Rangers

We tend to lean toward cool sounds, but this is also about tradition. No matter what other arenas sound like, there is one goal horn that is probably familiar to even people who don't follow hockey.

With apologies to all fans who feel nothing but general annoyance when the Rangers score, we can't pass up the old horn at Madison Square Garden.

No. 4: Washington Capitals

Some might call it loud and irritating. However, there are two better descriptions for the horn at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

Unique and cool.

It sounds more like a remix than a goal horn, but it's played every time the Capitals score. Lately, that means it's played a lot for the league's best player (well, he's at least in the top three).

No. 3: Chicago Blackhawks

After what he experienced in Game 6 of the Western Conference Semifinals last season, Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo probably disagrees. After not making the Western Conference Finals once since 1995, Chicago got to the NHL's final four in 2008. A five-game series loss to Detroit ended their magical run, but the pieces are in place for the Blackhawks to again be a perennial contender in the NHL.

One of those key pieces is forward Patrick Kane. After posting over 140 points in his first two NHL seasons, the dynamic youngster graces the cover of EA Sports' NHL 10. Kane spoke with FanHouse about the game, the Blackhawks, and what was a tumultuous summer.

Like many young players, Kane said he grew up playing EA's NHL games, and was a candidate to be on the cover of last year's game, which featured Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf. "I'm happy it ended up working out," he said.

"Now that it's out, reality sets in that I'm on the cover. It's pretty cool."

He noted that it was his dad who told him the good news once the deal with EA was worked out. Kane said he was supposed to keep it under wraps, so he didn't tell any of his teammates the news. Word leaked, and Kane had a rather funny story about an exchange with Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews.

"I was in the locker room," Kane said, "and Toews walks in. He says 'I hear you're on the cover of NHL 10. Why are you on the cover? What about me?'

"It's cool to be on the cover. Great for me, and good for the Blackhawks, too."

This year's offering from EA is rather low on new features, but it builds effectively on a very good game last year. First-person fighting, the ability to start scrums after a whistle (be careful, because starting them is a good way to go shorthanded), a rebuilt franchise mode (Be A GM) and improved crowd animations are among the key features.

In real life, Kane said he feels his team learned a lot during their playoff run last year.

"You figure out what to do (in the playoffs)," Kane said. "Experience goes a long way in the playoffs. At the same time, we're a year older."

Asked what his team has to do to go even farther in the playoffs, Kane did not hesitate.

"Put it all together," he said. "We've got good chemistry off the ice, and on it, too."

There were two pretty controversial stories over the offseason involving the Blackhawks. On July 14, word got out that the team had fired general manager Dale Tallon, who had seen a ton of success since taking over. Former Blackhawk Martin Havlat, who had signed with Minnesota July 1, was openly critical of the move, blaming front office unrest on executive John McDonough.

Then came the morning of Aug. 19, and word that Kane had been arrested for an alleged assault on a cab driver. The case was settled just over a week later, but it wasn't the way for the offseason to end.

Now that it's time to play hockey, Kane couldn't be more excited for the chance to move on.

"It's nice to get everything behind you," Kane said. "You tend to take things for granted, but it's a privilege we all have to play this great game. It was a tough time, but now I get to move forward."

Kane was appreciative of the support he got from many different places, including his locker room.

"I got great support from the Blackhawks, EA, family, friends, everyone. The team has been great, from the front office to the trainers, everybody."

As part of a busy summer, the Buffalo, N.Y., native also had a chance to take part in an evaluation camp for Team USA, as the 2010 Winter Olympics approach. Kane is excited about the opportunity to represent his country.

"I hope it happens, especially with the Games in Vancouver," he said. "Canada came on U.S. soil (in 2002 at Salt Lake City) and took the gold from us. It's not city versus city, it's country versus country, and I think this is the greatest country in the world. It's a great opportunity."

Kane and the Blackhawks head overseas to open the season. They play the Florida Panthers Oct. 2 in Helsinki, Finland. Meanwhile, NHL 10 is available now at stores nationwide.
NHL 10 Cover Boy Patrick Kane Happy For Chance to Move On originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Tue, 22 Sep 2009 09:00:00 EST . "It's maybe better I learn it now than later in life."

Outside the courtroom, Kane apologized to his family, the city, the Blackhawks and his fans "for being in a regrettable situation."

"But it's behind me. It's time to move on," he said.

Accompanied by his parents, Kane took no questions from reporters, stopping only to deliver his statement as he left the courthouse in his hometown.

In court, defense lawyer Paul Cambria said Kane is a law-abiding person and outstanding athlete.

"He desires to be a tremendous role model and I believe that he is," Cambria said.

Radecki told police the cousins attacked him Aug. 9 when he said he didn't have 20 cents in change for their fare. The driver had bruises and broken glasses.

Later reports indicated the dispute started after Radecki, following the practice of some other drivers in college neighborhoods, locked the cab doors until collecting the fare to ensure his passengers did not leave without paying. Radecki said the Kanes gave him $15 for a $13.80 fare and that he gave them a dollar back but did not have coins for the final 20 cents.

Cambria said Radecki has a lesson to learn, too.

"Cab drivers, if any of them try to lock people in the car and just presume that they're not going to pay them, and when they ask to be released so they can get out and get their money out of their pocket, they shouldn't keep the doors locked and drive the car down the street," Cambria said.

When asked whether Patrick Kane struck the cabbie, Cambria said, "I absolutely have no basis to say that he struck Mr. Radecki. I wasn't there. You weren't there."

Message left by The Associated Press for Radecki's lawyer, Andrew LoTempio, were not immediately returned Thursday.

Attorneys said Radecki sought no restitution, just an apology.

The Kanes were indicted Aug. 19 on misdemeanor charges of assault and theft of services and harassment, a violation. A grand jury dismissed a more serious felony assault charge.

"It's amazing that you're even here," Amodeo told the Kanes from the bench. "If you look at the situation and think of 'what did I do?' and all the other alternatives you had to deal with the situation, it wasn't a smart move."

Amodeo could have sentenced the Kanes to as many as 15 days in jail and a $250 fine.

Patrick Kane was the No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft and the NHL's rookie of the year in 2008.

Copyright 2009 The Associated Press. According to the district attorney in Buffalo, a grand jury also dismissed a felony charge for second-degree robbery.

If you'll recall, the two were arrested when they allegedly attacked a cab driver and took their money back when the driver informed them he didn't have 20 cents change to give them.

Gene Warner of the Buffalo News reports the two sides are still working toward an agreement that would "have the Kanes either plead to just a violation, probably harassment, or be granted an adjournment that could lead to the case being dismissed months later."

More from Warner:
If no plea deal is reached, a possible conviction on either of the misdemeanor charges could lead to up to a year in jail, but that's not expected to happen here. "For a first offense, that's extremely rare," Sedita said. "In similar cases, even if the defendants were convicted as charged after trial, it would be unusual for them to see any substantial time in jail." Legal experts pointed out why the third-degree assault charge seems to make sense in this case. Third-degree assault applies when the victim suffers a physical injury without a weapon being used. More serious assault charges, which are felonies, are lodged when there's either serious physical injury or a weapon is used, or both. Law-enforcement sources have said there was no evidence that a weapon was used in the Aug. 9 incident or that the Kanes entered the taxicab with any intent to forcibly steal money.
Kane addressed the incident earlier this week at the Team USA orientation camp and apologized for the pain he caused his family, teammates, fans and his hometown of Buffalo.
Patrick Kane Facing Misdemeanor and Violation Charges originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Wed, 19 Aug 2009 14:45:00 EST . So, about two months late, summer has finally arrived in my neck of the woods. Glad to see that it could take the time to finally stop by. But along with the heat comes a weird time in the hockey news cycle. Basically, anything and everything is a story. Alright, so the Patrick Kane twenty-cent-cabbie-punch thing is a pretty big deal, even if he ends up getting acquitted. But other than that the hockey media -- myself included -- is really just grasping at straws to write about which reminds me, has training camp started yet?

Let's start with Theo Fleury. It's all well and good that the 41-year old with a long history of off-ice issues that derailed an otherwise successful career is trying to give it another go. You can't hate on a guy for giving it a shot. But let's realize the hurdles that Fleury left for himself to jump.

First and foremost, he's 41 and hasn't played in the NHL since 2003. Getting back into game shape is one battle. Another is the indefinite suspension that current hangs over his head after violating the NHL's substance abuse policy. So he's got to get a pass from the commissioner before he can suit up for anyone, which leads us to the next issue -- actually getting a chance to play for an NHL team.

But to be honest, I do wish Fleury the best. When he was at his best he was one of the most exciting players in the league to watch. He's just got a heck of a hill to climb. Earlier this year 41-year old Claude Lemieux made a comeback to play about 10 minutes a night down the stretch for the Sharks. The word on the street was that Lemieux had always kept himself in great shape. So that's the kind of odds Fleury is up against. Not insurmountable, but very, very tough not including the suspension. The reality of it is that it's likely more a summer dream than anything that will become a reality during the winter

Then there is the tale involving a young Blackhawk in Buffalo. Being that it's a matter of the law -- I am no lawyer -- and it's a matter of an altercation in a cab at 4 AM (a cab I was not in), I can't say who's telling the truth here. But sometimes -- and hear me out on this one -- folks in the media can blow things out of proportion a bit. However, athletes are prone to making the same mistakes that us regular folks are, so who knows. Either way, it's another black eye the Hawks don't need after the cloud of smoke that surrounded Dave Tallon's dismissal earlier in the summer.

And then there is the most interesting tall tale of them all this summer. The soap opera that is the Phoenix Coyotes. In the latest installments Jim Balsillie tries to probe the NHL owner's unanimous rejection of his bid (good luck with that one) and Jerry Reinsdorf claims to have an agreement with the Coyotes' second largest debtor who, in fact, is not Wayne Gretzky nor Shane Doan. So the big ball of crazy in the desert keeps on rolling and we're still no more sure about where it's all going than we were last week or last month. But hey, it sure is something to talk about, huh? And those distant dreams of another Canadian team aren't that bad, either.

So there you have it: bizarre arrests, longshot comeback stories and bankruptcy court ownership battles. Those are the hottest hockey stories in mid-August. They all leave me with the same question in mind; "Is it time for hockey season yet?"
Coping With the Offseason: Tall Tales and Mirages of August originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 13:00:00 EST . The two were leaving Chippewa Street, the hub of Buffalo's nightlife.

Actually, they technically paid their fare, but allegedly punched the driver and took the money back when the driver notified them he didn't have 20 cents in change to give them. They were arrested at about 5 AM, three days after Kane attended an event with the mayor in Buffalo to celebrate the opening of an ice rink and park facilities.

"It's special for me, it's the place I grew up," Kane said at the time. "The best part is coming back and hanging out with your buddies and family." He didn't list "assault and robbery" as other special things about returning back home.

According to the driver, the fare was $13.80 and the pair paid the driver $15. When the driver couldn't produce 20 cents, he claims he was punched in the face and head, grabbed by the throat and had his glasses broken. A torn $5 bill was later found in James Kane's pocket.

Both Patrick and James were charged with second-degree robbery, a felony, as well as fourth-degree criminal mischief and theft of services, both misdemeanors.

Kane is one of the best young wingers in the game, and FanHouse's 47th best player in the NHL.

Kane is in the last year before restricted free agency, one of the Blackhawks' young stars expected to receive a hefty raise. Still, you would think that he would have enough banked on his current salary to toss a Buffalo cabbie $1.20 in change (compared to the cost his character and wallet will face thanks to the alleged incident, a buck and change seems a minor pittance).

Then again, when you're 20 you make stupid decisions. With his name in the headlines, the rising star is probably regretting this one.

Hossa was a key component in Pittsburgh's trip to the Final the previous season, where they were knocked off by the Red Wings in six games. He turned down a lucrative contract offer from the Penguins to sign with Detroit because, in his mind, the Wings gave him a better opportunity to win the cup.

It's hard to blame him, seeing as how the Red Wings were an already stacked team, and would be adding one of the game's best two-way players. In the end, Hossa went home without the Cup, again coming up inches short in the final seconds.

Draft Year: 1997

Taken 12th overall by the Senators, Hossa has 63 more goals than any other player selected in 1997. And for us video game junkies? He'll also be remembered as one of the most dominant cyber-athletes to ever be digitally captured with 16-bit graphics.

In April, 2008, IGN named Roenick's appearance in NHL '93 as the No.4 video game athlete performance ever, trailing on Michael Vick in Madden 2004, Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl, and Mike Tyson in Mike Tyson's Punch Out The first two are no-brainers, in my opinion. Bruce Garrioch originally reported on Friday morning that the league was investigating whether or not the Blackhawks and Hossa had worked out, or discussed, the possibility of an early retirement, which would clear Hossa's salary cap hit off the books in the future. Hossa signed a 12-year, $62.5 million deal with Chicago on the first day of free agency after spending one season with the Detroit Red Wings.

Garrioch quotes an NHL executive as saying that the league is looking to put a damper on these types of deals, and that "they are building a strong case against Chicago to make an example of them. This issue won't just go away. Lots of other GMs are supporting the league here."

One general manager that's probably not supporting the league? Paul Holmgren of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Craig Custance of the Sporting News reported on Friday that Chris Pronger's contract is also being investigated.

According to Garrioch's report, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly claims the reason the league is looking into the Hossa deal is because it will take him into his early 40's, which is something that hasn't happened with the previous long-term signings. Pronger's contract also expires when he's 42, while there's been plenty of confusion as to whether or not it's considered an "over-35 deal." Just as a comparison, Henrik Zetterberg's contract expires when he's 40, as does Johan Franzen's. Vincent Lecavalier will be 38 when his new 10-year extension expires.

All of the aforementioned contracts are structured in a similar manner: front-loaded with ridiculously cheap final years that lower the overall cap hit. Lecavalier, Zetterberg and Franzen are each scheduled to earn $1 million in the final year of their deals, while Chris Pronger's is even more of an extreme -- the final two years of his contract will pay him, roughly $525,000 per season.
Reports: NHL Investigating Marian Hossa, Chris Pronger Contracts originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Fri, 31 Jul 2009 14:40:00 EST . The building remains open in Eveleth, and they are still actively inducting new members. The 2009 class features some famous NHL stars, an inventor, and a pioneering group of ladies who changed the face of the sport.

Three players who made their mark in the NHL are part of the Class of 2009. Two of them -- goalie Tom Barrasso and forward John LeClair -- have their names etched on the Stanley Cup. Barrasso was part of the 1991 and 1992 Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins, and he leads all American-born players with 61 career playoff victories.

LeClair won the Cup in 1993 with Montreal, but may be more famous for his work in Philadelphia. While part of the well-known "Legion of Doom" line, LeClair amassed 50 goals in three straight seasons. He was the first American-born player to accomplish that.

The other NHL star who is part of this year's group is former Blackhawk Tony Amonte, who is perhaps best-known for scoring the game-winning goal during the 1996 World Cup of Hockey final against Canada, a game played in Montreal. In 15 NHL seasons, Amonte totaled 416 goals.

Also in the Class of 2009 is a gentleman who never played the sport, but made an incredible impact on the game nonetheless. Frank Zamboni's name should ring a bell, as that last name adorns ice-resurfacing machines all over the sport. Zamboni and his family developed the first machines of that kind, and eventually brought them to the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley. There have been over 8,500 Zambonis produced. Frank Zamboni will be inducted posthumously, as he died in 1988.

The last member of the class is not a single person. Instead, it's an entire team.

In 1998, the United States sent an elite group of women's hockey players to Nagano, Japan, for the Winter Olympics. This team, coached by Ben Smith, blew through its competition, outscoring opponents 36-8 and twice beating rival Canada. The second win over the Canadians came in the gold-medal game. This team was captained by 2008 U.S. Hockey Hall inductee Cammi Granato. It featured star players like Katie King, Jenny Potter, and Karyn Bye (pictured above).

This team didn't just win a gold medal. It paved the way for women's hockey to grow in this country. As more and more colleges pick up the sport, you see girls' hockey growing across the country. When it comes to pioneers in their sport, the 1998 U.S. Olympic team will always have a place on that list.

The Hall has not announced plans for induction ceremonies this year. Last year's ceremony was held in Denver, in conjunction with a Notre Dame-Denver men's college hockey game.
US Hockey Hall of Fame Announces Class of 2009 originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Tue, 28 Jul 2009 20:15:00 EST . Many of them have involved the Chicago Blackhawks.

With that in mind, FanHouse recently caught up with Comcast SportsNet Chicago analyst Ed Olczyk -- perhaps better known for his work as a main analyst for Versus and NBC -- to get his take on all the changes happening in the Windy City. Olczyk was born in Illinois, played part of his career for the Blackhawks, and still has some very strong feelings about the team, not to mention the state of affairs in the NHL.

Overall, Olczyk said he was somewhat surprised to see teams spending as much as they have this offseason, especially with the salary cap expected to fall some in 2010-2011.

"Teams don't have issues this upcoming season," Olczyk said. "It's the next one. To a certain extent, I am surprised with some teams' spending. I'm surprised that it's happened."

When it comes to contracts like the 12-year deal the Blackhawks gave to forward Marian Hossa, Olczyk likened it to "circumventing the rules."

"If you think a player is only going to play a certain number of years, you stretch the deal out. The only players I would even consider giving past eight years would be difference-makers, the guys who will be your cornerstone captains. If you make a mistake, it could be costly down the line."

Hossa did recently have shoulder surgery, which could jeopardize his ability to start the season. However, Olczyk believes there could be a silver lining in a brief Hossa absence this season."To be firing out the door, whether he was misinformed or not, he's in Minnesota now. Don't worry about what's going on here." -- Ed Olczyk on Martin Havlat

"He's played 198 games or so over the last two seasons," he said of Hossa. "I think it could be a very good thing for him. How he's going to be able to jump in and mesh, it's kind of like getting him through a trade.

"Hossa's a world-class player, a consistent threat with or without the puck."

Olczyk expressed confidence that Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville would handle the situation well.

FanHouse's Adam Gretz has been counting down the NHL's top 50 players. One of the many very tough decisions he had to make was selecting Patrick Kane of Chicago over captain Jonathan Toews. When asked to compare the two, Olczyk said it was very difficult.

"Right now, it's Jonathan Toews," Olczyk said. "You have to look at the big picture. It's two different styles. The center versus the wing. The better goal scorer and the better playmaker. It's very, very close."

There has been controversy this offseason regarding the departure of forward Martin Havlat, who bolted for Minnesota in free agency, then criticized the direction of the organization as the Blackhawks fired general manager Dale Tallon. Olczyk was quick to defend the club, going on a Chicago radio show to fire back at Havlat. When asked by FanHouse about Havlat, Olczyk measured words carefully, but was not shy in his thoughts.

"I guess there really was no need for him to talk about anything negative," the former coach-turned-top-analyst said. "He could have chosen to sign a one-year deal here and did not. He got a great deal in free agency.

"To be firing out the door, whether he was misinformed or not, he's in Minnesota now. Don't worry about what's going on here."

Olczyk praised the work of team president John McDonough, who has helped resurrect the Blackhawks.

"Under this regime in Chicago, everything's been done with one goal in mind: winning the Stanley Cup. Selling the product 24/7, evaluating. The Blackhawks are relevant in this city for the first time in 15 years."

Olczyk became the lead game analyst for the Chicago Blackhawks in 2006, while also joining up with Hall of Famer Mike Emrick on NBC. Working for Comcast SportsNet Chicago means Olczyk can work with veteran Blackhawks voice Pat Foley. It's a thrill for Olczyk, who says he listened to Foley growing up, and then had the fortune of Foley calling his games while he played for the Blackhawks.

While Olczyk didn't want to compare Foley with Emrick, he knows he's in a good position.

"I'm lucky to be able to work with two Hall of Famers," Olczyk said.

One of the great experiences every year for Olczyk is to work the NBC broadcast of the Winter Classic each New Year's Day. While it's a great event to take part in, there is another side to preparing for such a broadcast. That's because the broadcast platform that is set up for the Winter Classic does not offer the broadcasters any protection from the elements.

"The advantage of being a part of the game is being so close and being in the elements," Olczyk said. "Preparing is mental with the conditions. It's all off of memory. It's all about the game. It's an event. It's a celebration of the greatest game in the world."
Ed Olczyk Believes in Blackhawks' Management, Criticizes Martin Havlat originally appeared on NHL FanHouse on Tue, 28 Jul 2009 13:00:00 EST .
